No, not because they leak, but because if you have to remove it for some reason (and there is often a reason due to my design capabilities) then you have to cut it, and are limited in how you can put it back together. The bulkheads are generally the most expensive fitting on the plumbing system, so I'm cautious so they can be reused if necessary. I guess I've been lucky, few threaded fittings leak on me, but then I've been plumbing houses and work for years, with much higher pressures than I've got on my tank plumbing.

I assume that you're referring to connecting the PVC to the bulkhead, not the bulkhead to the tank. the PVC glue should be fine to connect PVC to the bulkhead. if it is just on the drain and no pressure is involved then even silicone would be ok (though not the best idea). All pressure connections you will want to glue really well with primer and pvc cement.

what is your technique for using threaded connectors? i would prefer to use them for the reasons you stated, but i just can not keep them from salt creeping.

I use teflon tape, 4-5 layers, wrapped clockwise looking at the end of the pipe, and tapered, with only one or two layers on the end building up to the 5th layer toward the body of the pipe. Tightened more than hand, using a wrench to get about a turn more.
It'd be nice to get together over a Guiness and I'll show you!

well, it looks like we will be having a plumbing party next Saturday. of course the Guiness will be provided!
sounds like i was using enough tape. does it matter how many wraps you use compared to the size of the pipe being wrapped?

My instructions referred to 1/2-3/4" pipe. Doesn't hurt to use more on bigger pipe. Good luck with it!
