A beckett is bascially a special type of venturi for air injection into a water stream. They can be found at various garden supply stores. They were originally sold for foam production in ponds. The link below describes the development of one beckett based skimmer.

a beckett is just another way to supply the air. these require a larger pump than what most people have lying around. becketts and eductor driven skimmers prefer pumps that can handle a fair amount of head pressure. these pumps are more expensive than what most people want to pay for thier first DIY skimmer project. a good ol $15 venturi valve and a mag 5 will make a great beginner skimmer project.
