Are these gaskets safe to use?

Hey all,

I may be paranoid here, but I picked up a few gaskets from Home Depot to replace the ones I had (old, leaky). They went with a DWV shower doo-dad. All I can say is they are black and kind of smelly. That makes me concerned about using them in the tank...

If these aren't OK to use, any suggestion where I could get some that are OK?

thanks,
Chris

LOL, yeah, metal would be bad...

It's a soft rubber of some sort. Feels almost like an eraser, but it's not that.

most rubbers and plastics are ok. it is the mold release compounds that can be bad. the slimyness you are feeling is probably some kind of grease. it will prolly go away if you wipe them clean.

i have always tried to use the standard rubber gaskets. black fairly hard. these seem to be pretty inert. i have not had any problems with using them.

i would try and soak it in some DI water and see if anything comes off into the water. if it does, i would be cautious.

If you can find a "Rubber" shop, or Gasket making shop, you can get some EPDM, 1/8' or thicker at 50-60 duro will work for you. Other than that, just follow Geoff's suggestion.

Soaked it in water. No dice, I'm taking it back to Lowe's. Just doesn't feel right. Still smells really bad and looks like something is coming off of the gasket when it got wet. Not worth it...

thanks!
