Hi everyone. Little more news on the aquarium controller. Please sign up on his web site for one of these bare boards if you want to do this. He has 7 signed up already and needs 7 - 8 more for 15. It's the cost break down to have the printed circuit boards made and this is the minimum amount.

Charles,
We plan on looking into having the boards assembled and even offering pre-built units, but obviously one of the main reasons for doing the project would have been lost...that is to allow people to DIY and save significant money.
As for the SMD things, yep they are occasionally a real hassle to work with, so we are planning on definietly having the main SMD modules available pre-made...this would be the Atmega chip, The tempsensor chip, and the Joystick controller device. I have designed little adpater boards for all of those that turn them into DIP devices and can be plugged into headers on the main controller pcb, so people can still do the majority of the construction, save money, and not have to deal with soldering smds.
Hope that makes sense and answers your question,
SWN
DIY Aquarium Controller
1/11/04 Update
Well, about 2 weeks since an update for you people. I have been a little busy during the holidays and at work, but don't worry, progress is still being made. The code is coming together slowly, I just have an RS232 interface and finalization of the Relay checking code to do. Everything else seems to be working (obviously not the internet interface...that will be addressed after we get the main controller working as planned). I recently bought a new Canon Digital Rebel, so any new pics should be much better.
The pcb and chip signup seems to be coming along well, we have about 7 people who have put their names on the list, still need about that many more for me to send the files out to a professional board house...but I am keeping close track, so if you are on the list, just keep an eye when we near 15 people signed up for whichever board you signed up for...I will email you before any final plans are made.
Another quick update, but it is hard to add updates on the coding, nothing fun to take pictures of. I will have some pictures of the final breadboarding of the ORP monitor when it is hooked into the controller soon. Until then, thanks for your interest..SWN
