Anyone ever use GE Silicone?

Hey has anyone ever used GE Silicone I before? I just got done with sealing my new sump baffles with it, and as I was reading down the side of that tiny tiny print, at the very end, it says:

Not for: food, or aquariums.

I called GE and asked why, and why wasn't that much better explained up front. The lady said during curing, it lets off Acetic acid. I said ok it will be very cured before I add it to the tank. She then said, well its still a long term effect. We dont recommend it. Great. She couldn't explail why the tube says 100 % silicon, but then has toxic ingredients not listed.

Has anyone else useed this before, or had any troubles with it?

I think you used the wrong one. GE silicone 1 "for doors and windows" is the one you wanted to use. The "bath" one has anti-mildew chemicals which would be bad for your tank. I would take it out and start over. Sorry.

hng is 100% right! OMG don't put that on your system. All life will be lost! GE Silicone II is fine but never the Kitchen & Bath type!

its says 100% silicon, doesnt say anything about additives..only says "cured sealant resist mildew and mold, and shrinkage."

So does the Silicon I for doors, and the Silicon II tube too, I think.

How do I know??

I found this stuff at Lowe's. Smaller tube, but no doubt about it being aquarium safe...

I guess I should've asked , why not? Its only states 100% Silicon. So far I cant find aquarium silicon anywhere, not even the LFS's here.

I found some silicon that did not say MILDEW RESISTANT on it...only says 100% silicon. I didnt know there was a difference.

Only thing I've been able to find to read on is acetic acid cure or ethyl alcohol cure type. Online, the aquarium types even say acetic acid. i dont get it. same as I used.

but Ive taken out the baffles tonight, and will use a different kind of silicon this time.

AH .. ok, well that'll do it. The LFS here carries tons of it, so easy to get.

Salty - you are right, both tubes do say 100% silicone, but the kitchen and bath clearly says that it resists mold and mildew. It's that single line that indicates that it has chemicals that you don't want in your tank. I used silicone I for doors and windows and it is fine. I also did a lot of research on it before using it. If you have any doubts, you could order a tube of aquarium silicone online.
