Acrylic in Hillbillyville

What I don't hunt things in this town.

I went to a local glass store today after spending the better part of two days trying to find a local source for acrylic (Google is useless in this town for finding anything). After finally finding a store that carries "Acrylic", I go by there today. I asked the lady at the counter if she could be kind enough to quote some things for me. I wasn't ready to buy today but that I was pricing so I could figure out what my project was going to cost me.
She says fine and asks what I am looking for. I ask what brands they carry and they carry Lexan and Plexiglas. Knowing that Lexan and Acrylic aren't the same thing, I go with the Plexiglas brand. I tell her I want a full sheet of 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2" that I hadn't decided on thickness and may use all 3. She explains that they only carry 1/8" and 1/4" thickness. So she quotes them. The 1/4" is around 100 dollars which is about normal so not bad. I then make the mistake of asking how to glue it together. Her response (along with two of her techs in the office right at lunch time) - "You don't". OK, how do I build acrylic boxes with this stuff? "You don't". OK, I want to roll it in a circle and glue it into a tube. "Oh you cant do that, it isn't flexible enough". Well DUH!. I will heat it. "If you heat it, you will have a mess in the floor from it melting". Oh boy, this isn't looking good.
After all that, she did ask if I wanted a sheet. I told her I was going to have to do some checking to make sure it would do what I wanted and that if I decided to blow 100 bucks I would be back. Her comment? "Thats what you will be doing, wasting 100 bucks".

I did ask her how they build acrylic aquariums and she explained that they cast them in one solid piece since you can't glue acrylic together. I think I could sell that lady some ocean front in Kentucky.

No wonder I call this place Hillbillyville and can't wait to leave.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

Yeah, drunk with desire to get the **** out. Does make me appreciate, even more, the acrylic store in Jacksonville. That guy has answered every single question I asked and even offered some advice about things I had figured wrong on.

I have one other lead on a store that carries acrylic. I met him at a restaraunt and he had on his glass company shirt. He says they carry 4-5 different brands. After today, I wasn't in the mood to talk to them so I will try them Monday. I want some 1.4" acrylic to try some rolling. I have one piece but not sure its big enough. Need to find a source for a full 48x96 sheet.

LOL, I know where every nail salon in town is. A google search for acrylic and phenix city alabama turns up every one in town but not a single store that sells acrylic sheet. Even adding sheet to the search doesn't help.

But, they all think a reefer needs a lighter to ply his "hobby".

I guess living in a big city has it advantages. But Portland,OR isn't a big city by no means.

With that price of $100 for that 1/4" sheet, I'm gonna to guess that it's extruded, cast would cost more.

Good luck with your search.

After being told that I couldn't glue/bond it together, I knew the lady wouldn't know the difference between the two so I didn't ask. I can get 1/4" cast for 120 in Jax Florida. I have some other options if Columbus doesn't work out. Atlanta is only 90 minutes or so away and may be where I have to go get it or pick it up during a trip to Jax FL.

The metro area is about 1/2 of what Portland is but to be stuck in the 1960'es is a little ridiculous here and I think the 60'es might be an improvement.

Have you checked Montgomery. It's only about 85 miles or so the other way. Just a thought.

There is a Farco Plastics in Montgomery and is probably where I am going to end up getting it at. I have dealt with Farco in Jacksonville so at least they know who I am and I will get the same price either place I go. Its just irritating to have to drive 200 miles round trip to get a decent price but if its what I gotta do, its what I gotta do.
