55g upgrades
Since I had to break my tank down when I drilled the overflow for adding a sump, I decided to take the opportunity to make more upgrades on the tank. Things here are suddenly snowballing - uphill!. All my whining about how poor my system was paid off big time. My sister Melinda suddenly handed me $200. and said fix it up! (This is her tank now, too! As she put it, she really likes to look at them, but hates the maintenence! She broke down her 40g which will be my sump).
So, for the last few days I have been planning, running to HD for plumbing parts, more planning, running back to HD to return plumbing parts and get differant ones, and continue on with more of the same for a total of 4 returns trips. I am now adding a second 1" drain to the sump via a double drain standpipe, adding a closed loop with a Mag 700 and a SCWD, sump return will utilize a spraybar across the top back of the tank, Ihave already painted the back of the acrylic tank, and after I finish playing on the computer, I will add a permanent crushed coral bottom (ala Graham). So far, all the plumbing parts are assembled and glued together. All I have to do now is drill the other bulkheads and install everything. I hope to get that done tonight when I install the permanent bottom, so that tomorrow I can fill the tank and check for leaks. I will take pics of everything and post them as soon as I can get the camara port reattached to my computer.

upgrading is one of those things that you hate to think about or get started doing, but when you get going you realize just how much better it is going to be!!!

I thought I was the only one who had to make multiple trips to the plumbing store!? And after the smoke clears and the upgrade's done, I end up with a box of spare plumbing parts! Must be some kind of conspiracy. Good luck with it Ood. If you need any fittings I'll dig thorugh my box!

How do you know me so well? I'm a lazy ol' cow and it does take a fire under the tail to get me moving! Yesterday was a lost day...today I plan to do what I planned to do yesterday...

I have left over parts, too! My HD plumbing experiences feels like some sort of initiation rite! I'm left feeling like " was it really worth all that?!". If it were'nt for the fact I had to go back one more time, to replace a wrong-sized cap for the standpipe, I think I would just keep those spare parts as war trophies.
Thanks again guys for the support and well wishes, project completion....and photos to follow soon!

There's no such thing as left over parts. They're a future project waiting to happen.

My dad taught me well. There is no such thing as scrap lumber. You can never have enough PVC fittings of any type. You can never have enough PVC pipe of any diameter. Wire coat hangars can be used for more than just hanging clothes. The list goes on...

This is a family-oriented forum, I don't think it'd be acceptable to post pictures of Ood painting her bare-bottom with PVC cement! Ood, are you left handed or right handed?

And you ain't gonna either! You might, however, get to see the fate accompli.... Oh, I am right handed.

Those first two pics are of my first bulkhead which I drilled with the tank still stocked. I just lowered the water level and moved some rock and corals around, then taped a plastic trash bag in the tank above the water to catch plastic shavings. It worked pretty good, but, when I tried fitting the bulkhead fitting and the pvc piping behind the hole, I realized the tank was too close to the wall. So, since I had to tear the tank down completely, I decided to do a few more upgrades.
