Whats a good lens?

I have a Canon EOS Rebel XT and I'm in the market for a new lens. I'd like to get something that is good for tank pics but will also allow me to take action and other regular pics(non fish tank).

Been looking at the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS.. but at over $1000 I just wonder if there is a cheaper but still real good lens that I could get insted. The price really isnt a problem, but at my experiance level I think it might be a little over kill.

Any recomendations??

That is a good lens! I have not tried it on my tank, but for action shots it is wonderful. We get good soccer shots on those rainy low light mornings from across the field.

hey! I also have a Rebel XT, addictive little thing isn't it?
I bought my camera as a big kit with all sorts of do-dads... I have the stock 28-90 (??? I'm at work, it isn't) and then I have a 70 (75?)-300 zoom. I don't know what that lense retails at, but I really love how it performs. I also scored a 100mm macro off ebay for half the retail price, and it was new... oh I rejoiced that day!
If you'd like to see my pics just go here... you can get an idea of how they both perform. The outdoor critter pics were mostly taken with the 300 zoom, and then almost all of my tank shots were taken with the macro. It'll be pretty obvious which is macro!

I highly recommend the canon 28-105 USM (mark 2 version with metal mount) f/3.5-4.5. The newer plastic mount is lower quality, lacks full time manual, and is a full stop slower as well.

It's a great walkaround lens and very high quality. This version also has full time manual override on the focus mechanism.

The "macro" section works fairly well and you can get down to about 1.5 feet focus distance.

It can be had new for under $300 or used for around $160.

Here are a couple photos taken with the lens. I would embed them here, but they're huge.

I've found the Canon 100mm macro on Amazon for like $480-ish... a far cry from the retailed $799! Now I'm looking for an ultra wide angle... always wanting something new...

The Canon 28-135 f3.5-5.6 IS USM is an all around good lens, decent wide angle to mild telephoto. You can find it for around 500.
