I have a D80 - I really like I don't know how it compares to the D40 though

I took these with a D40. I've had it for about 3 months and still have not figured everything out. I can take a pretty good pic, but I still need to learn more about the post processing.

A camera doesnt take good pictures, a person does. It's more about understanding the various facets of photography that make good pictures. The beauty of the SLR is that you're able to take control, but many P&S cameras will allow similar features.
Point being, don't rely on someone's pictures to judge a camera. Read reviews and take some classes/read books to help determine which kind of camera best fits you.

Very very true. I could use Dick or Butchs cameras and wouldn't get near as great a pictures as they do.

I agree...the operator must have, or acquire knowledge of how to use a camera, but the SLR gives the operator the ability to control everything. Most can also perform the functions of a point and shoot until the operator can learn more.

That being said, the camera does take the picture. I would summize to say if you tested 10 people that use a point and shoot on auto mode and the same 10 with, even an entry SLR, The SLR pictures will come out better everytime. The issue is how far do you want to go with the camera.
