photography ?

I've been trying to take some pictures of my corals under the moon lights. I can get the green to come out well but can't get the oranges and reds to stand out with the camera. Any settings I can play with?

Go ahead and post at least one of the images so we can see how the images are turning out. From there, we should be able to provide some recommendations.

From the pic you can see the green and orange come out OK, but the zoos to the right are putting out a beautiful red - but you can barely see it!

Do you know the settings that you were shooting with, or are you using a point and shoot? If point and shoot, does it have a macro setting?

It looks like you are trying to take a shot in a very low light environment. With that in mind, you will need to increase your exposure time (slower shutter speed) and increase the amount of light taken in by the aperture (lower number aperture) Most of my lenses will go down to 2.8 or even 1.4. Also note that with a lower aperture (wider; more light) that you will lose depth of field. It is a trade off.

Hmm, Its a point and shoot, a Sony Cybershot. I put it on the "moon" setting that turns off the flash and decreases shutter speed to let light in. I had to manually focus it as it wouldn't auto focus. I'm not sure how to manually change the shutter speed. I wish I knew what half the settings on it do. hehe. It does reasonable macro shots when i've got the light on.

Here are 3 samples. The only parameter that changes is the aperture:

Very Dark...
Lens Focal Length: 50mm
Aperture: f/5
Shutter Speed: 1/100
ISO: 200

Still Dark...
Lens Focal Length: 50mm
Aperture: f/2.8
Shutter Speed: 1/100
ISO: 200

A bit Over Exposed...
Lens Focal Length: 50mm
Aperture: f/1.4
Shutter Speed: 1/100
ISO: 200

Very interesting indeed.

On a point and shoot camera are you able to change the aperture? If so, then how do you go about it or know you are doing it?
