OK..i have no problem shrinking down photos from my old camera to avatar size simply via photobucket using their "avatar" shrinking option. However, my new nikon d-100 is taking much larger pics and although i can shrink them down to the pixel size requirement, i cannot get them down the the file size requirement for an avatar without distorting them severely with my nikon editing software. The pictures in question start out at 2 MB or more.

Any suggestions on how i can shrink one of these large pictures to avatar size without distorting it??? I actually have photoshop 6 as well but have no idea how to use it.

thx

Have you tried Ifranview? It's free and I've had good luck resizing 6 megapixels to avatar size with it

I usually crop and then resize. It depends on the pic though how well they turn out

IrfanView:
- select the area, you like to see,
- menu Edit/Crop,
- rotate left or right, if necessary: Image/Rotate
- menu Image/Resize - set size in pixels, only one, the bigger dimension, the other will be calculated automatically,
- the menu Image/Auto adjust colors,
- Image/Sharpen (or Image menu/ Effects/Effects browser - Sharpen - set % or sharpening. I'm using 10%).
- Save as jpg, 75%, leave others options unchecked.

That would be under edit avatar in your user control panel you can choose a pre determined one or upload from your computer a pic but it needs to be 150 x 150 I think the more you post the larger you can make it.

Here is a sweet little tool i came across i think y'all might like. Works way better and clearer than my previous method of simply saving the thumbnails from photobucket for avatars.

I use powerpoint (like Fly Guy mentioned)... very easy, plus you can resize a little or a lot by grabbing the corner of the pic and dragging. very simple.
