Fstop and Shutter speed.

how does Fstop work in corelation to the shutter speed. I have a lense that is 25mm - 90mm and when I'm zoomed in all the way I see massive amounts of shake. But when I increase the shutter speed I don't get enough light, and I still see shake. I just want to take one clear picture before I toss this camera against the wall.

Thanks

Edge

Sounds like you need more light to get a fast enough shutter speed to calm the shakes down. Also, for macro photography, a tripod is almost mandatory.

I don't have time to get into the details of shutter speed vs fstop right now (busy day), but if someone else doesn't by the evening, I'll give it my best shot.

The aperture or F-stops is the size of the opening in a diaphragm in the lens. The wider the hole the small the F-stop number IE… F2.8 is a large opening and F11 is small. With a large aperture opening like F2.8 you can shot at higher speeds because it lets more light in. Higher speeds will stop camera shake and blurring of motion. A smaller aperture like f16 will let you slow the speed down and capture movement if that is desired.

So if you want a higher shutter speed to stop camera shake you have to have a larger aperture opening (smaller F-stop number)

F-stops also have a lot to do with “depth of field” the smaller the aperture opening the larger the depth of field. Depth of field is the area that will be in focus after the exposure.

I can explain it more when I have a little time. (also at work)

Yes. Use the manual mode.

Thanks, gumhead.
Is it called f-stop and shutter speed in the manual mode? I have figured out white balance now for the rest. The biggest problem I have is that I can't find the full manuel, just the little quick set-up guide.

check the vendor's website. They usually have the manuals you can download. yes it will be called f-stop and shutter speed, always when dealing with cameras.

You'll probably be better off using aperature priority (f-stop) or shutter priority (shutter speed) rather than full manual. These two modes allow the camera help out a little.

On most cameras the above modes are designated as 'A' and 'S'.

In aperature priority mode you can change the f-stop and the camera will select the best possible shutter speed to maintain a good exposure. Shutter priority mode is the exact opposite. You select the shutter speed you want and the camera chooses the best f-stop for best exposure.

Most people find that these modes provide the flexibility they are looking for without the crappy results of poorly chosen combinations of f-stop and shutter that can result in full manual mode. Unless you are going for some special effect....then full manual is necessary.
