Can someone show me.....

The difference in pics between 55mm shot and a 100mm shot?
Doesn't have to be of the same thing, just want an idea how close you can get with a 55mm lens.

Mine are not a fair comparison. The stock lens is OK, but the quality of the glass between the stock lens and the 100mm macro just isn't fair. Plus I'm not a camera guroo.. So I can't give you the differential breakdown of the lenses

I don't think quality of lens matters, as we're looking for the difference of the zoom. But I'll try to take a number of different pictures with differing zooms, including 55mm and 100mm

It really depends on what the lens is designed to do. A macro lens will give much different results than a conventional prime or standard zoom.

I take it you are looking at the difference between 55mm on the canon 18-55 and a canon 100mm macro. If this is the case, the 100mm will give you march "larger/closer" images because it is designed at a 1:1 ratio, meaning that the objects image will fill the sensor at real life size.

The 18-55 will have a same sort of rating printed somewhere on it. I don't have that lens anymore, but I think it was around 2:1, meaning the image of the object will be captured at half its real life size.

Yes those are the two lenses

I am wondering for how long I will be satisfied with the 18-55

I made it exactly 3 months before I wanted a new lens and then 11 before I made the commitment. Now I'm addicted and looking at 2 other lenses

On the front of the 18-55mm it says "1:3.5-5.6"... Not sure if this is the same as what you were talking about as my 100mm says 1:2.8... So I'm most likely wrong

That's the lowest capable f-stop values, Hop. Different data.

Honestly, I would save the money and buy a different lens at the get-go. Buy the camera body, then a good all around lens. That stock one is ok, but I didnt use it for more than a couple months before I upgrade to this one. It's considerably more than the stock, but it's quite nice. I'm not really a camera dude, either (especially now that Vince is chiming in ), but I've been very pleased with it.

You have some other choices and brands that are in between, too, like a canon 28-105mm, Sigma 28-300mm, Tamron 28-200mm, really you could shop all day. And as Vince mentions, there's a lot more too it than just zoom...

I took a few shots with 2 different lenses for comparison. All are at their closest focusing distance.

28-135 @ 55mm

28-135 @ 100mm

100mm Macro
