Anyone use the New Canon EOS 40D?
I want to purchase a new digital camera and have read great reviews about the Canon, but would like to hear from an end user.
I want a 10 megapixel + camera, so something in the same class as the Canon would also be a consideration.
Looking forward to your input.
Eddie

All I know is that after months of looking for a new camera my husband has decided that the 40D is what he wants. He was been taking test shots with Canons and Nikons to look at quality so this wasn't a quick decision. The focus and light metering were "just fantastic". The speed of auto focus is faster than the Olympus E series.
BTW - I know Joe said he loves the 30D, which is what my husband thought he wanted, but then we learned that is no longer being produced. It is being replaced with the 40D.

Eddie, the new 40D looks like a real winner. The 10D/20D/30D line of Canons gives it a proven legacy and this one should be no exception. As good DSLR's go, it's a bargain at its price point.

Bear in mind that some of those people know what they are talking about and some don't so you have to separate the wheat from the chaff.
I'm committed to the Nikon lens system or I'd be taking a hard look at the 40D.

I have the 20d - and love it.
generally speaking, once you decide which manufacturer you are going with, you will stickwith that manufacturer for a while, as most of your money will NOT be in the body, but the lense.
Therefor - before you commit to Canon, nikon, konika or any other brand, look at the lineup of cameras, the lineup of lenses, and at the track record of the company.
I have $1,200 into the body, but ~ $4,000 in lenses ... I had well over double that in lenses at one point, but downgraded as I did not need certain ones anymore.

The 40D is going to be my next body soon. I currently have the Rebel XT, which is a great body to learn on, but I'm wanting to start a little professional photography soon so I want a more rugged system. The rebel will then become my dedicated astrophotography camera after I hack it apart and remove the IR filter.
Wiszmaster has it. Lenses are the biggest cost in SLR cameras. I just got my first Canon L lens the other week and it's L from here on out. L's usually start at $1,000.
You can't go wrong with Canon.

Hmmmmmm.....that sounds so familiar!
Virtually every DSLR will give excellent results. Even the entry level models can rival the output of the top end cameras of just a few years ago, some of which cost $20,000 at the time. As wiszmaster and Vince mentioned, the key is the lens system. Nikon and Canon are the clear leaders in that respect.
Many first-time DSLR buyers will stick with their original kit lens and just shoot in Auto or P mode but if you have any thoughts about expanding your photography, you will begin the learning process and start to acquire a lens collection. Don't rush that process or you will wind up buying lenses that don't meet your needs. I've got some great lenses as well as a couple that just make good doorstops. As Doug1 has said many times, "It's cheaper to do it right the first time."
Don't forget the peripheral cost in time and money in learning digital processing, with programs such as PhotoShop, which usually results in upgrading your computer to handle the large files. Those programs require a lot of RAM and CPU capacity, not to mention hard drive storage for all those 10mpx images.
Photography, like reefing, is a continuing process in learning and equipment upgrades if you're serious about it.
Good luck with your camera purchase.

I just picked up a new 40D body yesterday. I love it, the technology and build quality differences are quite noticeable.
I totally recommend it for anyone; but I will still say that for the price and if you are a beginner, it may be a much better deal to go for the XT or XTi.
One thing to consider is size; the 40D along with the 30D are (perceivably) much larger, and a bit harder to carry around. I find the bigger body much better as it has a larger grip and a more balanced feel, but with the battery handle accessory on the XT or XTi you get pretty close to the same grip feeling.
Make sure to do the proper research first. Along with reefs, photography can get really expensive when buying on a whim.
