Water Temp Problem!

Hi everyone. I am taking care of my boyfriend’s saltwater tank while he is away at marine bio field school (this is his posting name). I just got back from dropping him off at field school… checked the tank… and saw his 2 clown fish swimming sideways and breathing fast.

We had a super hot day of 100 degrees here, making the temp water raise to 82 degrees in side the tank! Bad. He left a frozen water bottle to use for just this situation, but I am wondering if there is anything else that I should be doing? The frozen water jug seems to be working. The clown fish are begining to swim around more and have retreated back to their anemone home.

Is there a product that you all woudl suggest in order to keep the temp from rising again?? The weather here is not going to get any cooler. I have no way to get into touch with my boyfriend right now, and he said that you all would def. be able to help. Any advice would be much appreciated! This is my first time taking care of a salt-water tank. Thank you thank you!

The clown fish will do that from time to time. The fish would be the last thing I would be concerned about with 82 degree temperature. Some people keep their tanks at that temp all the time. It is not that high as long as you can keep the O2 in the water and the CO2 out.

The problem is not actually the temp that it is but, rather, the speed at which the temp changes. I would not worry much really as long as the temp don't get over 84 degrees, then, its time to panic. J/K if the temp continues to rise try blowing a fan over the tank. Don't blow it so much that it blows the water out of it though.

ok cool. thanks for the advice. i know that they will swim funny like that from time to toime, but this looks diff. i will def. keep the fan on the tank as you suggested though. hopefully the water bottle will change the temp pretty gradually. thanks again! i feel a bit better now.

If it becomes real serious let me know, I work in Eugene on the weekdays and can be of assistance if you need it. Keep using frozen bottles and keep a fan or two on it. How big is the tank? 50 gallon? 100?

I just had a similar problem, my tank hit at least 87 degrees. I have 2 false clowns and the only thing really effected was my frogspawn which nearly perished. Everyone else is happy. I opened all the doors and blew fans at the sump and tank. I then permanently installed fans in my hood and that really worked great. I don't think your 82 degrees is anything to worry about. Mine was 82 for a LONG time until I installed these fans. Now it's 77-79.
