Trying to figure out TRT culture
Ok... I've been using this site for a while. There are still a couple of things I can't figure out....
1) Why does everyone type *onday, instead of Monday?
2) Why not *uesday, *ednesday, *hursday, etc?
3) What does happy (day of the week) have to do with Reef discussions?
4) The happy birthdays are nice... but again, what's that got to do with general reef discussions?
I'm not trying to start a war (lord knows I'd lose)... and I really appreciate the commraderie around here... just can't figure out some of the why's and where's of the forum.
Anyway... Happy *uesday to everyone!
JJ

No worries about flaming here. If you go to work on *onday then you know why the M word is not mentioned.
Also, this is a happy place, not one of those mean old forums. They even answer my stupid questions...every single time.
Let me email you a margarita

The Birthdays?
I can't say I'd visit TRT every day (well that's not completely true ) if it was only Reef discussions what took place in the forum. Cath has volunteered to remind everyone that we're somehow a family. What else do you do when you're around family besides argue, watch TV, BBQ, etc ? Celebrate!!! Birthdays, anniversaries, newborn childs, etc. Cath does a terrific job at bringing everyone on TRT (at least the regulars ) around a group of people to wish them well. It's part of the fun. I love TRT for the people more than anything else, so much that I've lost almost all interest in visiting other places. The General Reef Discussions is almost an obliged visit every time one enters the forum, so it is usually the first place you get to meet most of the TRTers. The Good morning thread is like the doorway to the forum and if you have a peer you want to congratulate and feel like sharing a piece of virtual cake and maybe, have a few laughs, you go to the Birthday thread. It's not all about tanks here, IMHO.

For me I try to stay out of "The Think Tank" I don't care to try to answer a question with another question! And the original topics seem to get sidetracked & buried by personal opinions way to quickly. Not that there's anything wrong with that! It's just not my cup of tea!

Thanks all! I definately agree that this is the friendliest forum I've seen. I am not personally offended when new hobbiests ask simple or repetitive questions... many boards I've visited aren't so tolerant. Most newbs are greeted with friendly tidbits like "USE THE SEARCH BUTTON!" or "I searched for your topic and got 1255192 hits!".
Oh - and as for the *day... thing... Monday's aren't the only days that suck... If you're following that theory .... in my opinion, the only days that deserve their first letter are Saturday, Sunday, and Holiday!

Heck I even bought a Mandarin as my first fish (%$&*% LFS) before I even had a clue or bought the 500 plus book and they did not flame me...they helped me out.
Five years from now I will have another Mandarin...oh yes you will be mine.

Culture? I can't speak for the rest but the closest I come to culture is when I let the skimmer run too long without dumping the cup. Now that's high culture!

Phishnoob, I know what you mean about your mandarin. I had one for over a year, and he got sucked into a powerhead I'd put in the tank to try and save a tabletop acro I'd bought foolishly. Every time I go into the lfs, they have big fat mandarins for sale, but I'll have to bide my time, wait until that big tank is well seasoned and has a healthy population of pods.
Heyoo, I've never been to a conference or meeting, party or had friends over, where the subject was the same the whole time. In contrast, the Internet has somewhat of a reputaiton of having narrowly focussed interests, and there are many, many, many places like that, but in between the banter and socializing on this site, lots of good information is passed around (and many opinions!) If you get frustrated looking for info in all this, JUST USE THE SEARCH ENGINE!!! Oh, sorry.
This is one of the very few sites where I've sought out and met in person people whom I've met here. And when I do meet them, no way would I be so rude as to only talk about the one comonality we have. Hey, you think Casey's got beautiful tanks, he's got a very nice yard and cute kids also!
