Q/T Forum

I am not sure of the need for one, but how about a Quarantining forum?

Discussions could include set-ups, methods, tips, what gets Q/T'd and what dosen't, how they would do it. A few "sticky's" on basic set-up, advanced quarantine tanks, Q/T cycling and filtration.

I am sure there are alot of reefers who do not Q/T new "inmates". But there are obviously a great many who do.

Hospital tanks could/should be included as well.

Here's a hypothetical question..........."Should a mandarin be quarantined?"

we do not feel that there is enough interest to support another forum. the search function works pretty well at finding topics that tend to pop up fairly often.

I agree with not needing a new forum. Everything gets "dumped" into GRD for "exposure" as it is. A new forum would do nothing but cause more dumping and people very seldom post to the appropriate forum, they simply post in GRD because thats where the traffic is at.

I do disagree with the functionality of the search feature though.

So, what you are saying is, by giving people the "idea" to ask about a specific topic, in this case Quarantining, there would be more threads posted in the GRD area? Isn't the purpose/goal of TRT to help other hobbyists?

As an inexperienced member that has only started to get his feet wet:

I have only been keeping sw since march/april of 08 and honestly wish I had q/t my fish. Ive lost my share of fish from getting a fish that looked healthy in the LFS and after a week of having it he infects half my livestock and I end up losing them. (this could be that I only have 1 LFS to choose from and they can be shady at times), but having a place to read up on just q/t tanks and see how other people have built them would be great.

Thats just my honest opinion. I give you guys amazing credit on the site and I understand the work and effort that goes into just the basic maintnence of a site this large.

No, he saying that another forum would not get any activity, anyone who had questions would put them in GRD just to get exposure. He's not saying that the forum itself would generate more topics.

I agree that the questions tend to pile up in GRD and a new forum would likely not help. I think that if Mr. Peanut wants to write a sticky thread on QT procedures for the Pests, hitchhikers and Disease forum , that would be an excellent place to link all the questions we will get in GRD. I will say even on other reef sites that have a dozen forums with stickys at the top to answer FAQs.... people still ask them without reading. Its just human nature I guess.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

Allow the use of Wildcards, quoted searches. I liked the Google search box that got removed because it allowed limiting the search. Get it to return results that actually are related to what I searched for.

Do a forum search for "zooxanthellae Weekly Discussion Topic". How many of the "hits" actually deal with that topic? The one I was hunting was #25 before it ever got to the point where it had anything to do with what I was hunting. Yes, you can limit it by Author but thats only if you know the author of a particular post. If you don't know the particular author, you are at the mercy.

At least make it find threads that have all the words I searched for. Not necessarily in the same post but at least all the words I looked for. It seems to simply find any word I am looking for and gives me a list to weed through to try to find what I am looking for. Makes it hard to find anything unless you just want generic search results.

Mr. Peanut, rather than simply repeat it, Chris (crvz) explained what I was talking about. People look and see a lot more posts/traffic in GRD and thats where they post in the hopes of getting an answer. But, the opposite has been true as well where posts have been Mod-moved to GRD for "exposure" which defeats the purpose of having sub forums.

searching using * seems to work as a wild card, what wild card were you using?

Wildcard wasn't the right term. I am not even sure what the right term is. Maybe a search limiter. Searching Google for Deep Sand Bed will find documents that contain the three words Deep, Sand, and Bed. But, searching for "Deep Sand Bed" will only find documents that contain that phrase. Using the Quote marks doesn't seem to make any difference to the TRT search. Its part of why I liked the Google box so much is it was much more powerful in letting me limit what I was hunting in an effort to find what I was hunting. Althought a Google search didn't let you limit to the poster as the Author but that isn't as big a deal as limiting it to phrases. Do a search for "Deep Sand Bed" and see how many of the first 50 responses actually deal with a Deep Sand Bed. It gets difficult sometimes trying to find things.
