Ich ID & Treatment primer

I think with how often ich comes up it would be a good idea for someone to write up a stickied primer on the basics of ich, how its transmitted, the basics of various treatment regimens. I think people will still need individual answers as well but a primer would help people look things up.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

Great idea! I looked on different website and if the parasite cycle is pretty well understood treatments are not and some people got in trouble treating the whole tank with chemicals supposed to be safe for corals...
Another thing that is unclear is how long you should wait before reintroducing your fish in the tank?
The parasite seems to not survive after 2 months without fish to feed its cycle. I'm not sure how easy is to keeping fishs for 2 month in a QT tank?

If the QT is setup properly, it shouldn't be any harder to keep fish in QT for 2 months than it would be to keep them in the display for 2 months. After all, all the QT is is an isolated display type setup - just a minimum setup.

Agree I could find all kinds of info on the cycle of ich. But if it wasnt for this forum and a few others I would not have known to keep the tank empty for 2 months or the fact hyposalinity would kill the live rock etc in my main tank.

I was going to attempt to post an entire webpage to cover this subject but quickly realized its simply too large to do so. As such....

I think that chucks link has very valuable information and is one of the better explanations of the lifecycle out there that is both accurate and understandable to a layperson. I think that this is important information to have. I think it would also be good to have a step by step procedure for whatever is considered proven methods. IMHO, hypo, copper based meds and the tank transfer methods are the proven ones. I didn't know ifthere would be disagreement on these. DOes a stickied primer imply that it is endorsed by the website? If there is a link to chucks webiste in a stickied primer to cover the lifecycle does that count as TRT endorsing that site? I don't understand all those sort of legal/bussiness side things at all I just think that crypto is one of the most encountered problems in marine tanks. I think that since this forum is so friendly to those starting the hobby we see a lot of questions about marine ich. THere are tons of rumors and misunderstandings about ich and I think some good solid information gathered and packaged in a clear and understandable package would be beneficial.

I would have to assume that the forum allows us to post off site links simply as a means for us members to share and discuss and would not take such a privelage as being an endorsement by the forum.
To endorse each and every link, it would have to be previewed and then approved /disapproved, which simply is not practical and would lead to only having available links that the forum agrees with, making all such links a one sided opinion. Not a good thing to have happen in keeping with the meaning of the word "forum".

I wasn't implying they have to approve every link we post in a discussion but if there is a primer that is stickied in and possibly locked at the top of a thread is made by admins or mods. In that situation whatever information is posted is sort of de facto endorsement. Of course any link in a regular thread could be pulled down by a mod but that would not be due to a mod not agreeing with the content but rather if it was political, not family friendly or some violation of the user agreement.

Well this wouldnt be much different to the Red Bug treatment thread that's sitting in the SPS forum... there are links to other threads outside TRT to show where the interceptor treatment originated and what dosage to use, etc. Jeremy, you're applying for a job here, if you want to start a thread giving a preamble, sharing some links, and encouraging discussion in the disease forum I'd be happy to sticky it for you.

I think it would be a great help and I would like to be involved in it.
