chemistry forum?
I don't know how difficult it would be to have a chemistry forum added (do we have one already?) to the site but I was thinking we could add one and have a couple stickies at the top with scripted Q&As about specific chemistry issues. For example, I know a lot of people are obsesive about having their PH at 8.3 when its not really an issue and then they go mucking around with addatives to try to fix something that isn't broke to begin with and screw other things up in the process. Other stickies could be the relationship between Mg, Ca, Alk and PH, PO4s effects on calcification, how SG effects measuring elements in our ASW and how temperature effects SG. I'm sure there are many more chemistry issues that arise in our hobby but I'll leave that to the professionals. If adding a forum is too difficult or not worth it could we just combine it with another and add the stickies to it.
I know my way around our tanks chemistry about as well as I know my way around my mothers house... I want to know it like I know my own house... I want to know what's in the drawers AND what's in the boxes that are in the drawers AND what's in the boxes that are in the boxes in the draws AND what happens when I switch these boxes around, put them next to each other or remove them all together.

Agreed. Im switching my major to biology....I have 5 chemistry classes to take. Maybe I can help out once I get some experience under my belt.

Hmmmmmmm another forum? I understand where you are coming from but I am not sure we want yet another forum, the site is getting so big, it's hard to keep up with all of it now.
Heres a thought tho, since we have The Think Tank, and a lot of these questions get hashed out in there, IF someone were to sort thru those topics and find a few threads that really cover the topic well, we could sticky them, and see how that goes.

You could also do something like home experiments that people are trying on there tanks. I know that I tried a few that went bad and some went well.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

I need a mop and a Gatorade. I didn't read all the post, but I would like a Chem section.

Ok I have been reading some of those threads and most of the threads are incoherant jibberish. Just about the only posts with any value are ones that Tom has laid out. I didn't say all so don't get upset if you posted in any of them. Tom has to be taxed on time, he has to be busy like the president.
"Ok tom you have a 45 second meeting in 10 seconds then you have 20 second to urinate"
Any how, what I'm suggesting is an organized compolition of coherancy. IE: a scripted Q&A. I am reluctant to leave it rest at that because a scripted Q&A can be quite remedial. Toms post on PO4 percipitation into calcium phosphate was an excellent example of coherancy but the rest of the thread is usless to me.
Maybe I am being lazy and selfish... I mean everything IS just a search away right? Well how do you sort through the rest of the jibberish to find factual information that is not questionable? Is tom the only person on this forum that is always right? I don't know. I read stuff from people all the time that is contradictory to what I understand but its stated as a matter of fact. I know I'm not always right (very much at all really) but I try.
Hard is the truth to see, clouds everything the dark side does.

Yeah I agree. I was just posting those to show what COULD be done, not what should. I didnt say they were good.....just ideas. Like the electricity to grow corals.....I have heard a lot of people on here say its bologna.......well I have talked to some biologists.......and they seem to think different. I think we could use something like a chemistry forum. I like the general....because its an immediate answer......may not be right.......may be an opinion but its an answer.....I would love to learn more about the chemistry in our tanks and how phosphates actually percipitate. I was talking to a buddy of mine who has a BS in Biology.......I learned a ton! we were talking about O3 and the effects it has on all types of compounds. Pretty interesting stuff.

The problem with a chem forum is getting some one to run it, there are several people on the board that are fluent in hard chemistry( I am not one) but it seems their time is limited, hence the slowness of the Think Tank.
