Zoanthid Toxicity!
Well I was reading over on Reef Central, and stumbled upon a very sad story I thought everyone should read. Basically a fellow reefer was fragging zoanthids and his dog put his head into the bucket water that the zoanthids were sitting in and was poisoned by the zoanthids toxins. (Palytoxin to be exact) The dog died about 12 hours after the contact with the zoanthids. I just thought this was a good wake up call for all of us who keep tanks and work with these creatures.
It really hits home with me since my yellow lab is always sitting at my feet when I am working on my tank. Here is the link:

This has come up several times indeed.
But not all zo's are toxic. Palythoa/Protopalythoa are the beasts commonly presenting significant risk. Exposure (particularly of mucal membrane) to palytoxin produces numbness and even paralysis.
If the dog ingested the toxin in significant amounts, this could lead to an inabilty to swallow and properly coordinate its breathing.

Jerel, is there ANY way you could make that pic smaller?
As it is, the sheer breadth and height of it, the clarity ...makes me faint.

``Yellow ones as I recall are common and nasty palyotoxin producers. Even some of the run of the mill and less noxious can cause reactions in sensitive individuals. I think TD Wyatt has had a few off encounters fragging ordinary zooanthids. In some individuals this might be an accumulative thing like bee stings in some people. Never bother, stung lots , then one day BAM.l
Defenatly be careful when fragging these guys and most everything for that matter. easy to get a nick in skin when wielding a razor blade under water. Always wash up thoroughly afterward when fragging, don't smoke or eat till you have washed really well, and IMO surgical scrub would not be overkill with known antagonistics
Be careful in there

for some spp of zoos all it takes is exposure to the mucus of cut specimens. I wear gloves now, every time...
