Brian, if the one pumps through the filter, the other is the only one flowing dirctly into the tank? I would add at least a power head at the other end and aim them so the meet in the middle, It will help generate more random currents.
Have you had any problems with yiour Rio's? They have been the subject of countless threads on all the boards. They arent UL listed and there have been reports of nasty failure, involving ruptured casings and tank contamination. Considering the number of these things in use vs failures, I think its a very small percentage that have major problems.Unfortunatly if you are one of the **% and lose a tank its not much consolation

Brian,
I would think you need at least 3 powerheads, one at each top back side, pointing toward the front middle of the tank and at least one down very low blowing across the substrate. That's the setup I have in my 55 with 3 Maxi-Jet 600's. I also have the skimmer and a Whisper power filter for carbon providing additional circulation. 4 wouldn't be bad to insure good circulation throughout the tank. It's also a good idea to have at least one aimed in such a way to agitate the surface.
Strength of the flow depends to some degree on what type corals you are keeping. Some like low current, some high.

Having played with this factor in a couple of tanks, I don't think I would have less than 15x the volume of your TANK(not actual water, which is always less cause of sand/rocks).I know some do less. But my observations. Dunno what rio 600 is rated.
FWIW.

RE: Rio's

I have 2 Rio 600's, and 1 800 as current, and my HOTB Skimmer is powered by a Rio 800...no problems yet. I used one of the 600's when the tank was a Discus tank abut 2 years ago.

For what it's worth; I've seen first hand what a Rio Meltdown can do A customer who comes into our shop lost virtually everything in is tank do to the oilslick in the tank from the melted Rio. After pulling out all the dead livestock he did many waterchanges, ran polyfilters, scrubbed and rescrubbed the LR but it still ended up a total loss. I was on the fence about Rios before I saw that; now I'll never have another one in my tank. The chances may be slim but the way my luck runs.....
