silicone question
I just finished siliconing the baffles into my new sump. I used GE 100% Silicone II (Stock number GE5000.) I choose this because I have read in the archives here and other boards of people using it. But I'm a bit concerned. I just read this on the AskGESA.com website:

GE does not recommend the use of our CONSUMER products on aquariums. The Silicone II product line releases ammonia as the by-product of cure. The ammonia can change the pH of the water in the aquarium having a negative impact on the marine life.
|
During the cure? Meaning.. it says on the tube to wait 24 hours for a full cure, so after that it won't release Ammonia?
Please advise--
John

Wow that was NOT helpful at all! The woman on the phone just read me the same thing off the website! Heh.
Unless anyone else has used this product without negative effects, looks like I'll be ripping it out and starting over

I'm not a chemist, but i thought that cured silicon was inert. I could be way off here, but i would wait and see what other people think.
(Where is tom when you need him? I'm sure he would be able to answer this.) Where are our resident chemists?

I think it would be best to rip and redo.

I wouldn't think it would be a problem after it's cure time. For future information DAP makes a product called "aquarium sealant, 100% silicone".

I would definatly go with Ricks choice of caulking. In my line of work we use a ton of different types of caulk. Alot of the new ones carry fungaside and mildew resistant chemicals in them that will constantly leach so theat no midew or mold will grow on them as time goes by.

I'm still debating. I've found so many sources both for and against.
The tube does not say anti-fungal like the other tubes. Here is the post that originally referenced the GE5000 http://www.thereeftank.com/forums/sh...ghlight=GE5000
Where can I find that DAP stuff?
Thanks-
John

Thanks Rick. Actually I have seen that stuff somewhere. Time to start calling all the local hardware stores.

Any 100% silicone will work. It is inert once you have a full cure. It has always worked for me on all my tanks. GE does make a commercial silicone and if I could find a tube of it here in the shop I will post the part number. MM

it should be OK if cured, if it has anti fungals and such they will have to be listed. Most of the warnings on 100% silicone re: not using on aquariums, etc are for the benefit of the legal dept
