rust

I have a powerhead that I purchased over a year ago from Global Aquarium Supply and am finally getting around to use it on my new set up. The air cooled motor sits on top of the tank with the jets in the water. I'm not sure of a brand (everything is written in Japanese) but the model is SWR 4500. After about a week of use I was looking at it closely and noticed rust on the shaft that sits slightly above the water line but still gets splashed. Concerned, I contacted Global and althought that model is no longer sold, the rust is small and does not pose a problem on their tanks and that this little rust is also present on Quiet One, Rio pumps, etc. They also said they run carbon (which I do occasionaly) and do regular water changes, which I also do. So, should I be concerned about this rust? I always assumed rust was very bad for a tank. I really like this powerhead, it's quiet and puts out a good water movement. Thanks

I would not be supper concerned. If it was fully submerged and or a lot of rust, yea, but not just a little bit of rust.

'Just my 2cents worth

Me either. Gary there's the whole oxidized, bound carbonate thing.

One thing you can do is clean the rust off and them apply a thin coat of high grade silicon grease. Not silicon glue. That should stop it. You might have to apply it again as needed down the road.
