Measuring Stray Electric voltage

Do I use AC or DC to measure Stray voltage? I just used both and got 0VDC but 35VAC. Strange thing was as I unplugged things to try and find where it was coming from, the VAC actually climbed to 40VAC. Even when I unplugged everything I still got 5VAC.

I had to ask an electrician before I got straight on that you plug one probe into the ground on the receptacle and the other into your tank. This after first using my finger as a voltmeter! It was the titanium heater.

AC voltage is what ya got in your house,,,,,AC voltage is what ya read,,,ditto on the one lead in the tank , the other to the ROUND hole in the outlet, provided it's a good, known ,bonded ground,,,
if ya need more info in detail about this,,,check out/ do a search on "stray/ induced voltage" plenty of archived stuff about same,,,
BTW: best meter for the job is a Digital one,,,,plus can get scaled down to milli-volts too,,,,
