Lesson Learned

I learned something new today. I will never be able to keep cleaner shrimp in my tank. I put a peppermint shrimp in today and no more than an hour later my eel was hunting it down. The eel eats like crazy so I should have guessed.

they like hermit crabs too or so i'm told....
a friend of mine had a snowflake eel and put it in her tank a few months after she had put some bluelegs in, the eel would pick the crabs up by the shell and bang them on rocks untill they came out then eat them....

ahhh, i do not want to sound rude, but did you not look at what eels natural foods are? they mainly feed on crustacians(sp?). they will catch fish if they can, but shrimps and crabs are their favorite.

just a little research first.

the good news is, the eel is getting its nutritianal needs met.

We had 2-3 eels at one time once, and we use to feed them raw shrimp from the grocery store. It was really fascinating to watch them eat it off a wooden Shishkebob stick.

You are correct! Part of the reason we do not have eels any more.

Heh I knew that but since he always leaves my hermits alone because of how much he gets fed I figured I would try to put a shrimp in.

the sight of fast moving food, will get most predators moving.

the stick thing is fun, if the eel is small enough and the food big enough you get to see the spin-tear method of eathing.

It can't be more impressive than watching your brand new peppermint shrimp be destroyed and swallowed. I must say though it was cool to watch it chase the shrimp around then finaly catch it and eat it.

Like National Geographic...

...right in your very own tank! I have to admit, that sounds pretty impressive. And binylee thought *my* eel was on an expensive diet!
