how to recover from loss of power
First, let me say thanks again to all of you on TRT!!! What a first class group of friends we have here.
Andrew...I don't have already made up replacement water , so I'm in the process of making it. I had a 2 gal amount made up a few days ago, and I may resurrect that (heat it and aerate it) and do a teensy water change until I can get more going. What about running a carbon filter for a day or so while the new water ages?
Also, I don't think it would be great to use the current water that's in my Bak Pac 2R to run the skimmer. It's been stagnant since Wednesday night.
I need to know the difference in the looks of POd corals and gonners. I'm sad to say that the beautiful Sinularia that I posted a few weeks ago has a large section of black. Several other corals look shriveled, but I'm guessing that's a defence mechanism. Do I take out the suspected gonners now, or wait til the water clears some and the lights back on to get a more real appraisal of the damage?
Ms Stripe (the clown) is swimming around just fine. I haven't seen Mr. Spot though. He's probably hiding in the sand, which is one of his favorites hides anyway.
TIA

Eek
Cath do you have electricity now? What's your water temp?
I would take a wait and see. Keep a close lookout for anything that's decomposing though.

Thanks, Jerel!
Yup on power. The heater in my tank is set for 82º, and it has reached 79.7º. The water smells like a slimy xenia, I've gotta say. I was hoping to spare that coral, since it is the remaining bit of the huge beauty I had before a fragging fiasco last summer
BTW...I did call Tom's house around 6:30 and spoke to Mel. She said that though their power had come on for a while, they lost it again

I concur with what Jerel said, wait and see. When we dismantled Jim Hobbs' tanks last February (may he rest in peace), the house had been unoccupied for a few weeks and the water temperature was 56 degrees The Xenia crashed hard, but button polyps, Wellsophylia, Scolymia, Caulastrea, Aiptasia and Valonia (!!!!!) all survived just fine, although they were really P***ed off at first. The button polyps stayed closed for almost 3 weeks but they weren't rotting away so I let the be, and slowly they started to come back.
In fact, in my show tank at the shop I have Jim's huge Scolymia (hard to believe that came out of a 30 g tank!) it was too big for Blithe's jam-packed 165 so she gave it to me some months ago.
I was amazed that anything survived for that long, after a period of some neglect before the heat went off -- but it all appeared to go "dormant" if that makes any sense.
Good luck, Cath, hope it all comes back for ya.
Hugs,
Jenn

Cath,
I agree with the above. Your corals may just be ticked off. If they are not decaying, then leave them be. They may make a full recovery. I would definately put some carbon in the tank. Get some fresh saltwater mixed up and do a large water change.
That is about all you can do. It is pretty much a waiting game now. Hopefully your corals will recover.
Andrew

gawwwrsh... Now I feel all gooshy inside. Thanks so much Mike.
This board and the friendships here are an important part of my life. Thanks so very much for all your help.
I'll report back after the lights have been on a while. I did take the xenia out, though. Nothing much left there So you all don't think the black sinularia is a gonner? That doesn't sound good to me. I'll watch that guy and another leather today.
Both the fish are swimming around.
Tom, on the other hand, has had far greater losses

Cath - and Tom,
I can't tell you how much we feel for you all...Please let us know what we can do for you...tragedies like this can hit anyone, no matter how prepared or unprepared, one can be hit and another spared, and just know we're here for you in more than just spirit.
My son once cut a black part off his leather (sarcophyton or lobopytum) and the rest did fine...it was stung, not chlled.
Give Tom our best when you talk to him.

i know hind site is 20/20 , and im sorry about what happened.
i think that most people here have thousands invested in there tanks. i picked up a small generator for $80 and used it once already when our power went out for two days. cheap investment that just might save your tank.
also great for margaritas at the lake.
