Fire in Reef Stand!!

Hi All!

Well I was awaken by my wife Pat around 1:15AM this morning and she said there was a fire and some smoke coming from the stand!
For some unknown reason, I had the power cord plugged in that goes to a bad unit in my dual 175MH ballast. We got the fire out and I took the ballast apart and removed the bad unit.
I will be ordering a new ballast, electrical cord with mogul socket and two new bulbs very soon. The other unit in the ballast is fine so I have one 175MH bulb working so will be ok.
So thankful that Pat was still up and noticed the smoke! God sure does like us alot!! Right cath?
Well called into work and taking my personal day and will be going to bed pretty soon! Why I plugged in that cord, I have no answer! Being an OFR is going to do me in!!
Good night everyone as everything is safe and secure here!

Johnny!!! Thank God that He had Pat awake!!!!! That is waaaay too close a call, you two.

That kind of wake up would surely make it hard for me to go back to sleep, Johnny!

Take care of your wonderful selves!

I back you up on that. Smoke detectors should now be in my wish list....
One for the stand, one for the hood !

I'm sure God likes everybody. We need to give him a little help though... I hope everybody's tanks are safe.
I'm sending good vibes to all reefers that this dooesn't replicate in their homes.

Wow you were lucky! Back in college I had a piece of tubing that sprung a leak and was shooting water into my aquariums power strip. I woke up to the smell of burning electronics and smoke all throughout the house. I unplugged to power strip before it got a chance to ignite, I really got lucky that night! We all need to check our tanks equipment everday to avoid these hazards. Glad to hear everything is OK for you.

Glad

Hi,
I'm so glad that everyone is OK. and we all learn a good safety lesson.
So as value added to our health and tank's sake. I think these are needed besides our fancy, expensive equipment:
- Battery operated Smoke detector: $10
- Battery operated liquid local alarm: $10 (you can find it at local piping store or Home depot, I'm not sure). What it does is You put this on the bottom of your stand on the floor. If there is a flood either from a sump or tank, the water will complete the circuit for alarm unit. It will sound. Or even fancier, a switch is great. When there is flood detected, it will shut down the pump, etc.
These are the safety measure you shall take in order to protect our home and hoby.
But needless to say, it’s kinda funny to say “Honey, I burned down my tank
- Life: Priceless....
- Anything else is a credit card to shop for coral...
