i don't know if this is what you are looking for (and i'm sure its not, but i havn't found any othert opurtunity to bring this subject up) its that i see an awful lot of books and magazines with the pics of Royal Grammas and cardinal fish completely upside down....
I guess its a myth that they are upside down-swimming fish..... ?

IceBear,
Royal gramma's may swim upsidedown, this is not a myth. I had one that 90% of the time would be that way. He only turned upright when he was eatting. It blew me away. I couldn't get enough of watching him.

I think perhaps they were thinking of people with larger tanks... I have seen a tank with two grammas in it, but they were a mated pair... as for tangs, well I have no personal experience, but have hear enough horror stories to wonder.
I should say though, that some ways of thinking are definatly outdated. I talked to somebody this weekend who had a fishonly tank about 20 years ago... he was stuned when I told him of nano tanks, coral reef tanks, sps tanks, skimmers, refugiums ...etc. And I hadn't even gotten to the really technical stuff. I showed him pix of my puny reef and he was impressed that I could keep that stuff (all of it easy) (well it's easy today... back then it wasn't)
So I guess that it's those who are willing to go against the grain of common thought to make "progress"...
just a thought

This would make a great thread for Discussion of the Week. There's tons of myths out there.
Did you guys know that Vaughn was actually breeding and raising hard Caribbean corals in the 1800's? That there have been marine labs in the Caribbean and Florida Keys since the very early 1900's?

G loretos are often seen under rocks and caves upsidedown in the wild.
Grammas and other similar fish often wont tolerate others like them in smalll areas like smaller tanks. with much larger tanks maybe different if adequate space to claim turf

Something tells me I better grab my walker and head for the hills.
FWIW it's very common for people to keep several royal grammas in one tank here. The trick is to keep enough of them.

Not sure if it's true, but I've been told that you should only have one of each "body type" of any species...otherwise they will attack each other. Just as an example--not that damsels are a good choice, but it's what came to mind--a domino damsel and a chromis would be fine because their shape is different (although the domino & similar shapes also attack any fish in their space...), but a domino and a striped damsel wouldn't because their shape is the same.
I'm sure alot also depends upon the size of your tank and their area of "territory" space for whatever you put in the tank.
Just my two cents from what I've heard...like I said, not sure if it's true, because I have seen contradictions.
