Canopy Rust?
I found an oak finished ProQuatics Canopy for my 55 for $79. I think this is a good deal, but I'm wondering how to keep the hinges from rusting, or if this is even a concern. Thanks.

Hey Waterbury, did you read my mind? I've got a solid oad canopy on my 29 that I've had for nearly 3 years. Yes, there is some rust at the hinges, and I've wondered the same thing. Also, there is an area towards the back of the canopy where the paint has peeled off and the exposed wood has swollen some, though not much. BUT...that swollen wood is raw, so to speak, and it seems that it's flaking off, kind of like you'd see in particle board (I know it's not that...way too heavy!)
So a few days ago I bought a silver tape (nooooo not Duct Tape ) called Polyken 360 All purposed waterproofing repair tape. Has anyone used this or know if it's ok to use to seal this area?
Sorry to piggy back on your thread, Waterbury, but it seemed like a good idea

Hi Cath.
You prolly need to do a little more to your canopy. Any flaking paint needs to be scraped off with a putty knife and then repainted.

WG & Cath
There are several ways to tke care of the rusting.
The best way, is to go the way of the SS hinges, unfortenuatly costs $$.
Another would be to steel wool the hinge and put back a clear coat of protection.
And maybe the least desirable way would be to steel wool it and paint it with a oil base paint that would stink and be slow to dry.
The last two are almost the same, what I would do IMHO as long as the hinge is working and no rust is falling into the tank just leave it alone. When it does finally fall apart, replace it but put on a extra coat of clear beforehand to give it a little more protection. Salt and most metals just don't get along.

I went to Polyken's website and read up on it. It sounds similar to a product we use at work. If it's the same thing then I can tell you the adhesive is very aggressive. If you get it stuck to your skin it can pull the skin off. Good stuff.
