Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter
I recently became aware of a device that is available to prevent fires due to electrical arcing. The device is an Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter.
I believe these could be a very important piece of equipment in our hobby.
Anyone have any experience with these?

A Google search turns up a lot of information about these. State Farm has a page dedicated to them and indicates they run $40-50. That's slightly more than I paid for my GFCI breaker. Cost isn't bad at all IMO.

those are interesting. i could not tell where you would put one if you have a GFCI on the same circuit. i would not mind adding several for the tanks we have, but i would like to know where.

You can install a GFCI outlet upstream of all other outlets on the circuit and have GF protection on all outlets in that circuit. The AFCI goes in the breaker box.
My understanding is that these will not work if the neutral and ground are on the same bar so some panel work may be in order in some older houses. Hopefully Jeff will chime in on this.

Thanks for the info, Rick. Though I'd have to be lead by the nose to get it set up correctly. Oh Jeff......???
