Question

Am I screwed?

I finally took down my 55g reef of 10 years and transplanted it into my new 75g & cabinet Sunday. It only took 11 hours! After all of the sand and rock was put in and the water was so stirred up I couldn't see my hand in the tank. I think I needed to rinse the southdown a little more. The problem arose when I accidently dropped a 1 1/4 inch long sheet rock screw into the tank. I have yet to find it just poking around the area where it fell. I tried blindly "dredging" the sand with my fingers and poking around the general area with no luck. Will this do any harm if it is left in there or do I have to tear the whole thing down again.

I believe there is no copper in the screw so my inverts should be safe. I only envision a little extra iron being given off as it rusts away. The water is starting to clear nicely however, I did lose my Coral Beauty this morning. All the corals are opening nicely.

Sorry to hear about your coral beauty, hope the rest makes it.

You definitely need to find the screw, but I wouldn't necessarily tear it all down right away. Maybe just start removing sand in the location that it is most likely to be and work from there.

Keep us posted and good luck,

AEB

Buy a cheapo metal detector from radio shack. Wrap the loop in a garbage bag to keep it dry.

Try getting ahold of a cow magnet, or other strong magnet.

If you have an old hard drive you no longer need, they also have extremely strong magnets.

You could pull it through the stand until it sticks.

No, no... That would be too simple AND cheap.

I'll have to tear up some hard-drives. Thanks for that tip!

What would the effects be if it stayed in there? I am not sure if it is in the sand bed or stuck inside one of the holes in the live rock. The water was too stirred up when it fell in for me to see where it went!

Do you have a magnet for cleaning your glass? If so, couldn't you use it to find your screw?

I am going to try the magnet thing. It should work if the screw is in the sand. Otherwise it is going to be quite a chore. I moved a couple of rocks last night and with my luck it is probably underneath one of them. If I bury my head in the sand will the problem go away or does that just apply to work environments. lol.

I had my 75 go thru a long, ugly painfull crash from iron poisoning from an ignored pump. Don't leave it in, you will not like it

I am going screw hunting tonight. I will be armed with a large magnet. I will need to take out about 30 lbs of rock in the general area. Hopefully it did not fall inside any of the rock as it is quite "holey".
