I assume that if you use equipment from a freshwater tank you could bring algae along with that equioment if not cleaned prorerly ?

Hmm, you mean,can FW algae been started in SW? naaa, don't thing so,,,
i would clean as well as you can to remove the old FW algae, so it will not foul your SW tank when it starts to breakdown,,

what would be even worse would be if the stuff started a bacterial bloom in the water column as the algae decomposed...

Clean it VERY well.
