Doug,
Yeah, it's been archived to:
http://www.thereeftank.com/ubb/Archi...-1-001966.html
Btw, you told me not to put any more rock in my tank and I haven't, but when can I ? When it stops stinking ? And if I don't have a filter on the tank it's curing in, will it *ever* stop stinking ???

Yes, it will eventually stop stinking, lol.
Have you been monitoring water parameters in the rock curing tub/tank? When ammonia, nitrites and nitrates are at zero, you can add the rock to your tank. Have you done any waterchanges on the rock tub?
Hehehe, I know that Pikaboo is getting a noseful of "stinkiness" too; he's curing 100 lbs in his living room in a tub

Ok.. that was annoying. But after 15 tries of pressing the "Reply post" buttons, I actually get to reply.
Yes... My livingroom stinks right now. It's getting a lot better though! Right now, the ammonia is sky high! I've been curing for about... a week? So. a couple more weeks to go. I hope this smell goes away soon!

At the risk of sounding like a loser... no I haven't done any water changes, nor could I monitor any levels. I don't own any test kits. When I think that my water needs testing, I take it to the LFS and they test for free. If I would've thought about it, I could've had them test the water that the mantis was in...
(and yes, it's annoying to post, it took me about five tries last time)

well I gotta really recomend gettin at least the basic ammonia, nitrite ntrate test kits at this point. Hard to accuratly make a water schange schedule but I would start with about 25% have it tested and see where thats at.Can you borrow a hang on filter to run some black Diamond carbon in that will help some with the smell.
I know the board is being a PIA but hopefully we can resolve that in a day or two. Keep the Faith

I have had great luck with Dry Tab Master tests. I've heard a great deal of people who don't like them, but every time I use them, and then take a sample to the LPS to be tested, they're right on the money. I believe they have test kits for most everything you'd want to test.

I would second the dry tabs... they are a good basic test kit, easy to use, and will give you a guideline on what your tank is doing. as far as the rock stench... run carbon on the curing tank, and dont be afraid to change it once a week. even cheap carbon will work. doing weely water changes will help as well. If you keep the ALK and CA (as well as O2)nice and high while the rock cures it will help keep more critters alive, as well as getting your coraline alge off to a better start.

Mantis Capture
I'm so psyched, within an hour today I located, captured and sold a mantis shrimp out of my tank. I can help but wonder if this may be the cause of my recent fish deaths.
I was going to post this in my original thread, but couldn't get it to pull up for some reason:
http://www.thereeftank.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001966.html
I have to admit that he was rather cool to watch, but I've got enough to do with my main tank and the tank that I'm running to cure rock. I don't have the time and effort for a separate species tank, so I sold him to the LFS.

Hmmmmmmmm I cant get a responce from searching your name either, internal server errors are getting annoying. I think that might be a thread I archived, since they were takin off the main board to save space that may be why it wont pull up now. Bummer
We need a fix!!!!!!!!!

He was actually a very pretty blue color. I watched him for a while as he was rather fascinating. He was rather busy making himself a little cave in the sand under a piece of my Ricordia rock. So, I grabbed my net, waited for him to push gravel out and go back down for more and I scooped the rock and a bunch of sand in the net. I held the net over a bucket and carried it to my 10 gallon curing tank. As soon as he hit the water in the 10 gallon, he started swimming around like mad (I can only imagine what that water is like right about now). So, I quickly dumped the net and caught him without all the sand and rock.

Well, when I said the rocks stink, I have to actually pull them out of the water and sniff them or lean down and sniff the water. The tank is in my bedroom, on my dresser and I can't smell it. There is only about 20 lbs of rock in there, and the stuff is rather dense, we're only talking about four rocks that don't come close to filling a ten gallon tank. Half full maybe.
One thing is for sure, next time, I'll just put the rocks in my tank. The rocks look and smell worse than the day I got them and they were covered in feather dusters, etc which have all died off now.
