majano anemone and macroalgae problems, need your advice

OK, so everything in my 75g reef had been going great for about 1.5 yrs, but this summer I had some major heat spikes and lost some stuff, and now my tank is being overrun with majano anemones...I mean I have probably 100 or more, on the glass, rocks, etc......I have tried to take the rocks out and peel them off...I have injected with boiling water.....but I can't keep up....any ideas?

Also, I had some feather caulerpa that was localize din my tank, but it started to overtake everything, so I pruned it out, but now it is out of control and growing rapidly.....I prune it all the time but can't keep up, and if you just leave a little bit, its back to the start....does anything eat this stuff?

Thanks for the help......I'm just a bit frustrated

Pat

Not sure what you can do about the Majano anemones, but I had a calurpa go crzy in my 75 and my sailfin tang took care of it. This was the type that looks like mini holly leaves tho, not feather,FWIW

racoon?

Won't a racoon butterfly fish take care of the anemonies? Or is that just apthasia anemonies? I read that a foxface rabbit fish is great for removing algae.

Cool

I have a lot of feather caluerpa too. I harvest and give away when necessary. just have to be careful where I harvest from, the goni's and the shrooms seem to like it close by.

Pat,

I also had a Majano problem. The ones on your glass should be easy enough. Use a old credit card or something similar to scrap them of the glass, making sure to get evey last bit. When I'm scraping I keep a siphon tube pinched off & ready to go just in case any of those buggers break up. If they do I just suck the pieces up and out of the tank.

Majority of mine were on rocks & I tried Kalk paste that killed everything I put it on. Then a week or so latter I would see a a small green speck waving at me...DARN!!!!. I injected with diluted iodine & even kalk with no luck. Then just surfing threads someone mentioned putting a pice of LR or a shell over the Majano. Then when it moves on top on the LR/shell(sometimes overnight) you pull it out and scrap the B#!%$D off and clean off the area with freash water. I have removed 10 that way & now have two left, just waiting for them to get a little bigger.

Hope that helps.

Sam

Thanks for the tips...I'm afraid that I have too many to effectively try that last method......I'm not sure what I'll do.....I may have to spend the day taking all of the rock out and scarping again.......I just am afraid that they will come back..

Fascinating technique, Bonsai Sam.

Sorry for the stupid question, my brain is a bit fried at the moment, but are majano as adept at reproducing via pedal laceration as aptasia?

Absolutely... Shell method may work to some extent, but any small laceration of the foot will result in more of them. I have to take the time and kalk them every few months, I have had both racoon and copperbands (both spp) in attempts to have then eradicate the little rock anemone, but to no avail (I guess I will have to read the book out loud to these fishes ).

Interestingly enough, the copperband did eat one large anemone that I had growing on a piece of new rock, ate it down to a stump, and the pepps finished off the scraps. Thinking of putting the copperband in the prop system to try and control the Xenia... However, it doesn't seem to be interested in anything with a polyp on it.

that shell method sounds great! After treating my LR last weekend, I still found some tiny majano that I missed...I'll try that.

A couple of years ago I observed my hairy shroom battle it out with majano, and the shroom won! Maybe I should use move some of the shroom over near the majano. Mwahahahaha!
