Grey stuff appearing on rocks
Wonder what this stuff is? It started appearing about 2 weeks ago.
Much of the rock in my tank was LR at one time, but I took it out and scrubbed and treated it for the scurge of majano. Boiled the rock and let it dry out. So the rock was white when I put it back in the tank. Now I'm seeing this grey stuff on some of the rock.

Does it look like chewing gum on the rock?

I believe it's anarobic activity, you probally killed some stuff living in the rock and it is breaking down. Sometimes you see this in uncured rock also.

Cath you've just got some nitrogen/protein source rotting on that spot. Watch your ammonia/nitrite until you see it go away.
If it looked like gum, it could be one of the encrusting sponges or sometimes gorgs that are common on LR.
I need coffee!

Thanks, everyone
I've had the chewing gum stuff before, when these pieces were real LR.
Sigh...I guess I need to buy more honest to goodness LR for my tank. The rocks I have are beautiful shapes, but not filled with exciting suprises ...as in "What in the heck is that??"

Marcus,
Sounds like one of the encrusting or viscous sponges.
