your getting warmer.....
yes it moves.... its a sea hare!
its not the most gracefull of swimmers.... its just a tad faster than molasses on a cold winter's night. hehehe, it got stuck after moving 18" in my tank.... looked like a mushroom....
i placed an order for 2 of them. the smaller one, about 2.5", ran into a lta at the lfs, the outcome wasn't good. this specimen was the other one that arrived. its about the size of a baseball. i bought it to fight my hair algea problem. the smaller one would have been better suited for my tank. i'm not sure if this exact species has an ink gland for defense, i do know that it absorbs some of the chemicals in algea that are considered to be toxic as a defense.

geoff,
it is a "dolabella auricularia" . and it looks like i may need to move some rocks around to provide it a path to get around cuz of its big butt. it seems to get stuck often in a few places, not the most intelligent creature...
cat, hehe, its not known to have any "babe magnet" charisma either, and i think that's the reason its a hermie, but it still takes 2 to tango... this species has the ink sack defense, so i am care not to poke and prod it.

how did you request it from the LFS. did you just ask for a sea hare, or did you know the species you wanted. what area are these from. my LFS needs a lot of hand holding when i need to order a special critter.
great to hear it is munching the algae. i like curious looking critters that you have to hunt down to find. this one fits right in my liking.

Only a reefer would pay $$$ for a piece of goo....
I just had to ask if it was a mottled green thing that appears in both pictures and what exactly is it... a sea slug or a snail?

i just asked the lfs to order a sea hare. i didn't specify what type, but there are several different species to choose from. julian sprung shows 5 different ones pictured in his book "inverts", pg 90-91, under the chapter title "sea slugs", bursatella, dolabella, bolabrifera, and stylocheilus and a small aplysia spp. (like the red aplysia californica).
they are mostly from indo-pacific area of the ocean, north australian coast area. some can get quite large up to 60cm. i paid $15usd for this one.
i can put "it" good use, i know a few members in my local reef club that have an algea problem like mine, maybe they can use "it" for a few weeks or a month, to eat the algea off thier liverocks, that way it has a constant food supply. just an idea tho at the moment!

this is what "it" looks like when "it" slammed against the glass wall of my aquarium at full speed. judging by the size of the ripples still ungullating through out it , i estimate it was traveling around 15cm/min.

about 95% of tank is now "clean". the liverock looks great, and the corals around the tank are untouched. even the algea skirt that was around the top of my feather duster is now gone, leaving the duster unscathed, and the space between the mushrooms and leather cabbage had a large patch of nussiance algea that is gone as well.

Wow, IT has been mowing through that hair algae pretty darn quick. Maybe it's a good thing you didn't get two!
