Clicking noise?

ok guys I have a question....I have been hearing this loud clicking noise in my tank for the past few days...do hermit crabs do that? Its really loud but I have never heard it before...its during the day and after the lights go out, I haven't added any live rock for over 4 years...so I don't know what it could be.

Help! lol its driving my dog nuts

My first thought would be a mantis shrimp. But I think it's odd that you're just now hearing it after having the rock for 4 years

Don't Pistol Shrimp make that noise? Have you traded/bought corals and maybe got a small one in some macro algae and now he's big and hungry? It seems to me a thread I started long ago got those answers to a related problem.

FWIW

no the only thing that has changed in at least two years is I moved my tank from upstairs to downstairs...and let me tell you its not fun to move a 125

anyways...no the only thing that I can think of is that the hermit crabs are getting HUGE...and have killed most of my snails...I have to find a local saltwater store that isn't an hour away to get rid of them

I have seen some pretty big hermits at my favorite LFS in Portland. I would think when they get to battling or banging their shell on the glass it could make that sound.

Better defer to a more experienced reefer.

My Bluelegs have all but wiped out my Scarletts and themselves. I am down to 2. ! is about a 1/4 inch and one other. When I transferred to the new 240 I didnt have the heart to flush them.

When do the clicks occur? Have you ever heard them in a series?
I would describe a mantis to sound like a floating glass thermometer
being pushed into the glass by a water current.

If I was in Vegas my money would be on a pistol shrimp. If you had a mantis you would notice
mutilated crab remains from time to time.

I would have to lean the way of mantis or pistol shrimp to. If it was mechanical you would here the sound all day, with the shrimps it would be only at night or when the lights are out. A good sign to look for is holes in the sides of the shells of your snails.

Its that or your bristle worms have been taking tap dance lessons.

yea thats all I need my worms dancing

yea but if I haven't heard the sound before and I haven't added any new rock in my tank for at least 4 years...why am I hearing it now all of a sudden? and your right it sounds like something glass is hitting the inside of the tank, but it does that during the day too though, and no crab remains that i can see.

This is driving me nuts
