usmc2b2004's new tank
Ok so I went to the LFS and fell in love with this one tank so I bought it and not sure what to do now. I have a 55 gallon reef tank I just started but not sure if I should have 2 reef tanks but anyways.....
My plans so far as follows:
120 gallon twin internal overflows (what I bought tonight)
What I am getting in the next week:
40 gallon wet/dry (with some sort of skimmer "don't know")
Sand ( Don't know how much)
Rock (I guess don't know how much and cant buy 100lbs for $7 a lb)
Fish?????
Any suggestions would be great...
Oh yeah never had a tank with overflows so no idea what kind of pump to get or the capacity(gph) I am still new to the hobby and still learning...
Thanks

Sounds like a good project! One tip, regarding flow rates through the overflows, a lot of people recommend around 5 times tank volume per hour... so in your case about 600-700 gph (after head loss) should be good. But for total tank flow (which will be done with powerheads and/or closed loops as well as with the return pump), it depends on what you want to keep in the tank. What's the plan? Reef, fish only?

I thought about it last night and I'm going to do fish and coral. Like to have the hards and softs. How do you calculate the head? What all goes into that? And I would need a total turn-a-round of 10-20 times so 1200-2400gph right?

In the display, you may aim for 20x turnover, or even higher if you're keeping more stoney corals. I have about 40-50 in my 150 gallon tank, mostly from the tunze 6100 pair. Again, for the sump, you'll only want something in the 5x turnover range, so something on the order of a mag 9 or eheim 1262 (both with gate valves to control the flow) would be fine. For calculating head loss, there are a couple of calculators available.

What if i'm not sure excatly i'm going to plumb it, never done this. The tank itself has 2 "floats, 2 prefilters, and a return nozzle. Have no idea where the pre-filters go or anything else goes. It has 4 holes drilled so i guess it only has 1 Return or maybe 2. Or I could make it have 2 in and 2 out? What do you think? First time with any kind of overflow sump setup always been a HOB kinda guy but I want to further my knowledge.

Ok I posted the one of my future tank going to set-up this weekend, I also put one of my oscar and Jack Dempsey 125G with one close up of my prized Jack Dempsey, one of my 20g African tank with one of the peacocks, and a picture of my fiancee's 55g community tank.
