The Pinoy Reef Hobbyist

20 Gallon Reef Tank Set-up

Tank Setup
20-gallon all glass tank purchased at Cartimar Market, Pasay City. Stand is made of wrought iron and came with the tank. Salt water, live sand and 2 African clownfish added 11/02/2001. Live rock added 11/11/2001.

Lighting
1 15 watt flourescent tube that came with the hood. Upgrading soon to 1 actinic blue and 1 daylight.

Filtration
4 layer overhead filter. Activated carbon changed monthly. Only half of the sponge filter medium washed every month. Bioballs and some rocks for biological filtration. Protein skimmer rated for up to 50 gallons. Airwood changed when bubbles are not fine anymore.

Circulation
1 1600 gph powerhead directed towards the center of the tank against the return flow of the water from the overhead filter.

Additives
1 cap each of reef buffer, calcium+strontium & iodine every week or so.

Water Chemistry

Reeftank Inhabitants
Fish: 3 small green chromis, 1 small coral beauty angelfish, 1 small red blenny, soon 2 small ocellaris clownfish.

Help!!!

It's my second day here at TRT and I've browsed through different forums already. With what I've read, I came to realize that I was doing it all wrong.

Please help me restart my tank!!!

1.) I have a 2 inch crushed coral bed should I switch to a 3 inch or more fine sand bed? If yes, how can I reuse my crushed coral?

2.) I have an overhead filter with some bioballs, foam filter medium and activated carbon. Should I switch to a sump? How do I use a sump filter?

3.) I am going to upgrade my lighting soon, what do you recommend for my tank. I want to keep soft corals and LPS that only have low to medium lighting needs.

4.) Is it okay to position live rock against the back glass?

Hey!

Any other Pinoy reef hobbyists from the Greater Manila Area that would like to work with me towards a successful tank? I would like to have new friends that are also hobbyists...
