Tank stand failure?
Noob here! Anybody ever have a stand failure? Like come home and find that the stand that came with tank from LFS failed and tank broke? This has NOT happened. Just concerned after reading all these tank builds.

Most DIY stands are very overbuilt compared to the manufacturer stands. My current DIY stand can handle just under 20 tons (purely compressive). Joints will be the first thing to go in any stand. If the tank isn't completely level, or the stand isn't square, you will get unwanted lateral stresses and the stand will fold in on itself. Obviously this becomes a legitimate problem as tank size or stand height increases.
I'd love to know how much a MFG stand can actually hold. The cheap ones are probably within 50% maximum tank weight.

I never herd of that happened, but usually the hood tank and stand combos are all one company and even if not the company of the stand should cover it.

This was a huge concern of mine. I bought a scratched up P-store demo stand.
I ended up reinforcing it with 2 x 2's that are glued in to reinforce the corners and did a box structure underneath.

I have never heard of a stand failure, like suggested above, most home built stands a over built.
I do remember a thread a while back about a front panel in a custom tank letting go, the tank emptied in a living room almost immediately. It was a large tank too somewhere around 150g's if I remember. Hopefully someone will be able to find a link....

That's custom not manufacture from a LFS.

I had a failure, but not in the natural disaster way, where your chili is in the couch. but the stand was giving way because of unleveled floor caused a leak in the display. Not a good thing to see coming home after 2 weeks in jamaica.

Only think I have heard of is people putting their reefs on the older style iron rod stands and having problems due to it tipping. Most stands are built up to take the weight of a reef as long as its the proper stand for that tank. However you may want to check things from time to time. I had a 55 that was on a "rdf: (I think thats right it wasn't particle board) and the salt water started to warp it after years of use so it was time to get a new stand and canopy.
