Reef (Pictures and Movies)

I have been snooping around here for a while and I thought it was time to post up some pics.

Here is a link to a “thumbs” page depicting one of my reef tanks.

http://www.deviantmethods.com/Reef/ReefTank_Nov05/SchindlerReefTankNov05.html
(I just dumped the camera so there are a few duds)

Here are some 20 second movies that show how nice and random the wavemaker is…

(skip the first movie)

http://www.deviantmethods.com/Reef/Reef_Tank_Movies/

Quick specs.

~50G acrylic
~20G sump with fuge
18A pond pump with wavemaker (see the videos)
No powerheads
Berlin Turbo with some ghetto rig work
No mechanical filters (except on the weekend when I clean particulate)
4x96W PC up top (1x460nm, 3x50/50’s) (~8W/G)
100W over fuge @ 6.5k (bought at Wallmart)
Mostly soft tank
Blah blah blah

Across the room is another FOWLR that I have been slowly moving frags into

In the bedroom is a Freshwater guppy tank.

In the works?

In the garage I have:
1/3hp chiller
Doser (roller type)
100G with nice stand
2x250W 20,000k
2x175W 5500k
UV setup
Controller
Bunch of other crap I have forgotten about.

Eventually I will transfer the reef over. For now, the 50G works.

I am an avid DIY guy and I have 4 or 5 projects half documented. When I finish I will post them up.

DIY MH Hood on the cheap (with fans)
DIY 6’ tall venture skimmer (still tuning)
DIY chiller/heater controller with PRT’s (PIC uController)
DIY evaporative cooler (basically a waterfall with a fan)
DIY particulate vacuum (for tanks with no mechanical filter)
DIY surface skimmer (for RedSea skimmers)
Etc.
Ok, shhhhhhhhh

Wow that is a nice setup. I especially like the waves in that tank, what wavemaker are you using? I might have missed it in the specs. Again awesome tank!

SCWD...

Small, cheap, works good.

There is a pressure drop so I recommend attaching it to a very large pump.

You haven't had any problems out of the scwd yet? I started to get one but everytime I asked someone all they had was negative things to say about it.

I have read an equal number of positive and negative reviews for the SCWD.

For the record, I have owned my SCWD for 6 months and it has worked flawlessly. I overdrive it with an 18A 1800 GPH pond pump (the SCWD is rated to 1400 GPH) and I don’t run any mechanical filters in front of the pump. It has never clogged, jammed, or plugged and the pressure has stayed consistent. If it were to jam or clog, I would just remove it and clean it out with hot water.

I don’t doubt that some people have received “lemon” SCWD’s… It is a mechanical device that is subject to manufacturing flaws. There is an inherent risk to buying an SCWD but when you weigh that risk ($39) against the cost of a “Wave Controller” and 2 powerheads it is worth it (IMHO).

The SCWD has done wonders for my tank. Visually there is no comparison between having your corals “raked” in one direction vs. having them freewheel around. I wish I could definitively say that my corals have benefited from this, but I have made to many changes in the environment to say that. It is my suspicion that since adding the SCWD the overall environment of my reef has improved.

My only complaint about the SCWD is its small size. I would like a true ¾ inlet/outlet that takes 1” hose.

Here is where the nonsense started...

There are 6 tanks and 20 something buckets in one of those pictures… I about went mad trying to keep all of the water up to temp. My goal was to condense 4 tanks (two 55’s and two 39’s) into one 50. I stuffed everything with the exception of the last 20lbs of rock.
