thank you for the responses!
Kelli, we're still undecided at this point about exactly what we want. I'm still poking around and finding lots of information here. I'm leaning towards LPS, but still real open minded.
Tank looks good this morning, but temp seems to be running high, apx 81F.
Thoughts?

poorfishies, IMHO 81 is not too high, the most important thing the stability, andsince your still running your cycle you have plenty of time to get it where you want it.

okay, i know i'll have to go back up to the top to add to my set up later on, now that the thread's gotten this far... but bf and i went to 4 lfs today just to poke around. i'm leaning toward softies and lps, though he likes the brighter sps... will have to check out lighting options, but worried about maintaining temperatures as the house is frequently open to the oudoors. Checked out skimmers, too, after reading more here and, subsequently, on other sites all night last night.
Thanks y'all!

UPDATED!
Chamber 1-- added purigen bag, removed standard filter
chamber 2-- removed bio balls, modded to add tunze nano skimmer
chamber 3-- removed standard pump and replaced with Rio 6hf; heater in this chamber as well.
We have in the tank now 6 hermit crabs, 3 astrius snails, 3 nassarius snails. they've been with us for about 3 weeks now. the temp and all test levels have been perfect the whole time through, except for a recent bout of low salinity, which was cured.
yesterday: added blue linkia, a lawnmower blennie, two peppermint shrimp and some LPS (which I haven't figured out what it is yet).
The coral that's been showing up in the tank is awesome. We have some leather coral that is looking like cabbage leather and some really lovely purple mushroom coral, which seems to be spreading. There's also something that looks like a little blue haystack sitting in the back near the lights that hasn't grown very much, but i think may be rider sps. Sweet. Killed off a few crappy glass anemones yesterday, too.

ask and ye shall receive! LOL
I'm awful worried about being a good host to my linckia... i've got all my fingers crossed...it seems to be ok ftb. I know right now that we introduced it too soon, but lfs has had tabs on the tank and assured us it would be okay. I hope they're right. I'd like to defy the odds with this guy.
All babbling aside, here are some pics:
new coral on a beautiful piece of rock. I think we got lucky here:
(btw, can someone tell me what this is? I knew at the store, and they kept my receipt with the name. I'm tooo toooo lazy to look it up right now)
a not so good of the leather coral-- but it looks like a butterfly from this angle:

thank you Kelli!
One of our hermits bit the dust today. Didn't expect to need new shells so quickly, we'll need to get some shells this weekend. I'm so upset that we didn't get them before now. Everything seems to be happy in the tank right now outside of the poor misplaced crab looking for a shell. We've had a molt on one of the peppermint shrimp. Both of them have taken up spaces in little caves during light hours. The only odd thing I can think of right now is....
Rock.
In pieces.
for no apparent reason.
WHAAAATT????

we've added some more coral and an anemone. I'm not so sure the anemone is a good idea. Linckia rolled up the side of the tank this morning and looked like he was trying to make a get away. I love this. I really do.
