My first nano-reef
I am new to this, so figured I would start off small. I just picked up an Oceanic Biocube 14. The specs are as follows:
Size:
14 Gallon
Lighting:
1-24watt True Actinic 03 blue compact flourescent lamp
1-24watt 10,000K daylight compact flourescent lamp
2X external ballasts
2-.75 watt Lunar Blue-Moon-Glow LED
Cooling Fans:
2X 50mm
Pump Flow Rate:
137gph (520L/H)
Filtration:
Wet/Dry filtration system with bio-balls
So far I have just picked up the crushed coral for the bottom, salt, and water conditioner. Once I get that set up, I will get my live rock. I have been told to put about 14lbs in it.
If anyone has any other tips, please, shoot em out as I am new to this

One of the first things I learned out here-
Bio Balls BAD
Your live rock is enough filtration depending on how you set it up.

hmm interesting, I would like to know more about bio balls. I have heard that they are great as long as you dont clean them because the bacteria they hold is crucial to the filtering. But now I hear from you they are bad, and one other person that they removed thiers.

Fish Only there ok cause you can have higher readings of Nitrates and Phosphate and it's your filter, but in reefs, the live rock is your filter and you want much lower readings of Nitrates and Phosphate.

So then it would be better to remove the bio balls? I will be having lots of live rock in there. I am going to go with the pound per gallon rule as advised by my local shop.

The amount of live rock you have is great, it will provide your biological filtration and be much more interesting than bio-balls lol.

What if the bio balls were completely submerged? Wouldnt that make them just like live rock?

Well I finally got around to getting the water in today. Took me a while as I had to find a decent stand that could not be toppled over by a 2yr old. I will take my water to Al's tomorrow to have it tested and hopefully pick up the rock and get it in there

Yep, I went looking at the test kits this week. I am only getting them to test it the first time, after that I will be doing it on my own. I found some decent kits for $30. Thanks for the tip!

I have added 14.2 lbs of live rock, and bought a test kit and tested my water. The rock has been in there for a week now, and was curing for 3 weeks where I bought it. Its cured now and one of them is covered in coralline and another is starting. Soon I will be adding a clean up crew ... I will post them here when I get them.

What type of water are you using for your tank? No tap water plz, it will give you a lot algae and problems later on.
You also need a set of water test kits including a Refractometer for salinity reading. Not just one test kit, but one set of them.
Happy Reefing..

Yep, I am using tap water. I was going to start using RO water, but then I was told that the tap water with the chemical I am using to clean it up is just as good. Also that RO water lacks some things that are beneficial to the tank. Tap water is fine if you use it properly. I have my test kits already, including a Hydrometer for salinity testing. I have all I need right now, will probably get a couple more individual things for tests down the road though . Thanks.
