here is the metal halide "board " . the bulbs and reflectors are mounted on a piece of pvc fence board . the the disconnects for the fixture are made out of two different colored extension cords , which are then fed out to the garage to the worlds ugliest ballast .

time for some more info . tonight i will describe all of my safety features . their are two coral-life screamers at each end of the tank , the sump has an overflow that drains out to the garage . also a few new gadgets include a set of float switches that shut off the two skimmers and the auto top off and one that shuts of the main pump should the in tank skim boxs plug up and the tank level rises to high . on with the pics !

this pic shows the modified ultralife float switch that shuts off the main pump . since i have a wavebox the only place that i could mount it was in the center . the float had to be modified too fit under my hood , so the tube the wires run thru was carefully ground down so the tube could be bent over to a 90 degree angle then any exposed area siliconed closed . the bracket is made from a scrap piece of starboard drilled and tapped for a ajustment screw that holds the probe where i need it .

the next few pics are of the trio of float switches that turn off the skimmers and auto top off . i came up with this idea after painting my daughters room and not thinking didnt shut off the skimmers . well they overflowed the half gallon collection jug and proceded to flood the floor all the while the auto top off kept pumping water into the sump because of the water level continuing to drop . soooo to solve this i came up with this . it uses three float switches mounted in a modified (cut up ) container. if the skimmers should overflow the 1/2 gallon jug then start filling the secondary pan , after about one inch the switches shut off the skimmers and water top off . hopefully it won't have to ever be activated but i feel better .

one last feature is my homemade battery back-up .sorry i don't have pics of it but i will do my best to describe it . it uses a 12 volt bilge pump rated at something like 300 g.p.h. that sits in the sump . all of the other components sit inside a marine battery box , they include a gel cell battery about the same size as a motorcycle battery, an automatic battery charger and a mechanical relay like the one used on my light relay for the t-5s. it is connected on the same circuit as the main pump ,that way if for some reason only power to that plug goes out it will kick on . the battery will run the pump for atleast 2 hours which gives me time to get the generator up and running . when power does come back and the bilge pump stops , then the automatic battery charger recharges the battery and keeps it up . the only down side i have found is that the pumps only last about a year before the shafts become rusted . but at less than $15 at walmart its cheap insurance . one last project will be a temp switch too shut off the m.h. lights should the water temp rise to high . it will be made just like the temp controlled fan switch descibed above .
