I set this tank up without ever having any kind of fish tank before, those pictures were taken when the tank was over 3 years old. never did any water changes, not even once.
than I got a new girlfriend and pretty much stayed at her house for a year, went to my house just once a day and fed the fish and added water, I ended up over feeding the fish by a lot, I was feeding 5 frozen brine shrimp cubes a day everyday for one year, the tank crashed, nitrates were off the charts.
the whole tank was covered in algea, not a pretty sight, took what corals and fish were still alive to my local fish store, and than turned off the lights and put a blanket over the tank so no light could get in for about 3 months, algea was gone, than I started to do water changes to get the nitrates under control.
Then I had a garage fire with smoke damage in the house, tank was without power for 4 days.
Contractor that took all my belongings out including the fish tank put all the live rock in fresh water with one powerhead, a year later when my house remodel was done obviously the rock is dead, turned it into the insurance company and the gave me 5700.00 dollars to replace the sand, Live Rock, main pump.
So that is where I am at today, tank will be brought back to my house in two- three weeks and I will get it set back up and will take better care of it this time around,
one of my main questions is water changes, I read on this forum about all the water changes you guys do, my tank was doing great without any WC before the one year of neglect, all I had was an undersize protien skimmer, a UV light and an open retangular sump that was completly open, no dividers.
thanks for all your input, I am looking forward to sharing my new build with you and getting some better ideas on what to do and not do.
