you can add either some PC lighting or VHO this way you can add the actinic lighitng and things will not be soo whitish..
you can check the LFS or the sponors of a retro kit. not sure what you have over there.
there are a few threads about the timing for the MH also, epending on the corals you have in the tank, you might be able to get away with only running them a few hours aday.

No go to hellolights.com and look at the difference vho is a flo bulb with high output, pc is a small flo bulb and mh is a very bright kick booty bulb. Pc stands for compact flo heres the pc link http://www.hellolights.com/comfluorlig.html

That is a beautiful
i love the fact you dont see all the time and effort you put into it (seriously) so many tanks i have seen you see all of the pumps etc.... and you did a great job in hiding it and allowing us through pictures, but also yourself the opportunity to enjoy the beauty you created
could you tell me more on how you built the inside of it, the base looks amazing! i want to do that to my makeshift nano 30 gall/ hex.
tell me more

Thanks for the comments The tank Is a complete system from aquamedic BUT with a few mods mainly extra flow and the Geoff base, theres a pdf file on the bottom of the link which is the exact instructions i got with so worth a look.
I'd say if your quite handy with a few sheets of glass and a mastic gun you could quite easily copy, i have loads of pictures of the tank here so if you need any more info just let me know and i'll PM you all i have
Like you say everything being hidden in the back of the tank is a real bonus and for a newbie tank it's perfect BUT there are a few downfalls of the system
Firstly the tank is 2' front to back but i lose 6" because of the 'False wall' which hides the equipment and also its a bit of a squeeze to add any extras, can be done but it's tight! Apart from that it seems a simple system to run and i'll never get a wet floor if any pump fails
If you need any more info don't be shy to ask!
Matt

i just noticed this thread Matt!!
looking great!!
do not worry about all of that flow. all those other DSB people will all be jealous. they are not able to have that much flow in their tanks and keep their sand under control.
that plateau seems to be doing a great job, great work!!

Thanks everyone
The base works really well and like Geoff said i've got nice flow and the sand stays put. Even though i'm having a little trouble with algae at the moment the base is still pure white, blends in perfectly with the sand so it's invisible
If i had a second go the only thing i would change is how many holes i put in the spraybar and also the position of them, in hindsight i would have put less in the centre and more on the ends
