I wouldn't mod it at all right now. Get it up and running, get used to it, then figure out what you want to mod. What mods you make will depend on what you want to keep in the tank.

Congrats on the new tank and welcome to TRT.

Maybe I'll just stick to the middle chamber refugium right now, I'd like to do that before I get the tank running so it's easier to work on.

On a seperate note, is it OK to do a leak test with tap water or will it leave behind harmful residue?

No, it won't hurt anything at all. Fill it up, let it sit for a few days to test it, drain it and fill it with SW.

I'm starting to lean towards putting a Tunze Nano Doc in the middle chamber as opposed to the refugium and maybe replacing the stock pump with the Rio 6hf.

Since the Rio has a flow rate of 350gph would it be bennificial to put a Y splitter with some ball socket tubing and flares on the output to aim the flow better?

Yes, it will help aim it better and a wide flow is always better than a tight return flow area.

skip the rio and try to see if you can put a Maxijet in there. I had the rio 6hf and it just died on me.

I built a refugium light over the weekend, I had most of the parts sitting in one of my boxes of electronic junk, I only had to buy a lamp kit and mini PC bulb from Home Depot. It's really bright and stays pretty cool, I just hope the light leakage isn't too bad when it's behind the tank.

I got the maxijet and the y locline in but the flow seems really feeble, I'll try removing the 90 degree elbow and running the tubing directly. Are there any mods to increase the flow of the maxijet and still use it as a functional pump?
