Dale - Husky_1's tank specs

Hey everyone,
I am pretty new here so here is my official TheReefTank thread

My Background
I started my first reef tank in August 2006. Originally I wanted to start a planted fresh water Amazon tank. My plan was to be able to have a freshwater ray. However, I had a friend that was into reefs, and he talked me in to trying a reef tank. I balked at the cost at first, but then realized that the freshwater tank I wanted was going to cost the same as a reef (BTW, my realization was not really correct). My first reef was a 38g all glass. Eventually I drilled this tank for a closed-loop and overflows. I learned a lot from this tank, including a few setbacks. Primarily how to kill everything in your tank but the bi-valves, brown button polyps and a sand sifting starfish (Hint: always use silicone marketed for tanks. Hint2: Just because it works in your friends 210, does not mean it will be ok in yours J). My other lesson from this tank was learning how to avoid getting excess quantities of water on the floor. Finally, it taught me how to go at things slowly (I am still not fully convinced I have learned this lessonJ ).
Before getting into reefs, I went “tankless” for 4 years. Before my sabbatical I kept FW tanks for at least 10 years if you include the fish in a bowl when I was younger. I never had anything fancy, just your standard angels, goldfish, red tailed sharks, and Gourami’s.

My Current Tank:
My current tank is A 92 corner RR AGA tank, run as a bare bottom mixed Reef.

My Filtration:
20g DIY sump with an Ocean Runner 2500 return.
Tunze 9010 Skimmer
Three little fishes Phosban Reactor, I like to use Phosban or similar AFO’s.
9W UV Sterilizer, the twisty one
A cleanup crew including: Astrea Snails, Mexican Turbos, Nassarius snails(Not normally in BB, but they are doing fine), small blue legged hermits, Large red-legged hermits, one Brittle star
Chaetomorpha in the refugium
~110lb of live rock. Its really hard to say because I had about 60lbs of live rock from my old tank and a lot of dry base rock.
Air, Water and Ice Typhoon 3 RODI.

Water Movement:
Ocean Runner 6500 pushing a closed loop with 2 low and 2 high outputs. The 2 high outputs are on a SCWD and have eductors to increase the effective flow.
Current Lighting:
1x Lumenarc Mini Stealth DE with IC 250 with a Phoenix 14k bulb
2x24 T5 retro w/ Ice Cap SLR reflectors – Bulbs are super actinic
1x36 T5 retro w/ SLR. – Bulb is the True blues.
2 120mm computer fans in the canopy that keep the water temp level

Stability:
Auto Top Using 3 float switch (2 for sump level and one for reservoir level). Kalk (Via mrs wages pickling lime) in the reservoir.
2 part dosing using an innovative aquatics pump with the 2 part tubing.
Water stays consistent temp with lights on by using 2 fans in the canopy.
‘Fuge has one of the Home Depot special lights on a reverse timer to help keep PH swings minimized.

Last water test results:

10/30/2007
Total Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
Salinity 1.023
Alkalinity (meg/l) 3.5 (11/28)
Ph 8.1 no lights 8.2 with lights
Temperature 78
Calcium (ppm) 475 (11/28)
Magnesium 1450 (11/10)
Phosphate meg/l .25 (Or less)

Stock:
Fish: 1 Solorensis, 1 female Mccoskers flasher wrasse, 1 male Line Spotted (I think) wrasse, 1 False Perc, 1 black sailfin blenny
Cleanup crew as described above
Coral: Mint green Acro( I don’t know any good name to call this), Ora Blue Green tort, Ora German blue Monti Digi, Superman Monti Danae, Orange polyp Monti Digi, Unidentified Echinopora, toadstool (neon green tips), Green/pink frogspawn, Candycane coral, miscellaneous mushrooms (will probably be taken out), GSP, A few different zoa’s, Orange with green mouth ricordia.

Pics:
Here is the most recent full tank shot. The rocks have much more coralline on them now.

Oh, yeah I have Xenia too, but this is kept in a high flow area so that its not happy and does not grow. This will probably be taken out soon as well as I reaquascape a little

Great intro and start up! What are you livestock goals for the tank? Anything in particular?

Also, I'm sure you've heard this already, but watch those GSPs as they grow. I keep finding them pop up throughout my tank, even though I've removed the majority of them. They can be quite striking, but are very aggressive towards other corals.

Yeah, I am very familiar with the plague that they can be. In my old tank they spread to a few rocks, so i am battling that now and eventually it will be isolated to one bigger rock that is somewhat horseshoe shapped. I hate the fact that they grow so fast, but I think they are gorgeous, if they end up being too bad, i will take them out of the tank completely. I do have some mushrooms, on a rock in the "middle" of this horseshoe rock. This will be my "softy" section of the tank, along with some overhangs that will have zoa's.

As far as coral plans, first I have a small amount of re-aquascaping to do. I am going to remove some of the rocks on the bottom middle of the tank. I will have this softy section in the front-offset middle-bottom of the tank. For the bottom sides, this will be my zoa section, since this area is shadowed. I plan on keeping my frog spawn on the left, this is not the optimal place for this coral, it looks fine and happy just not growing fast, which is my goal with it. I have my toadstool, this will be moved down a little further and brought forward some. The other LPS, my candy cane will be brought down to the center bottom of the tank. Around this, I plan on keeping some Acans and maybe another ricordia or two if I find some nice colors. Also my chalice will be put somewhere in this section, but may be a little higher, wherever it makes sense really.

After this comes the SPS: About 1/3 up in the tank, I plan on having 3 monti caps. I have my green, a red, and a confusa. These will be on the basically surrounding around the center pointing into the middle (2 up front one in the back). In between the Caps, and moving up I plan on keeping my some Monti digitata, in my limited experience these do not require too high of flow or lights. the top section of the tank will be other higher light "Branching" SPS. The only exception to that is the very back of my tang, you see a small piece of Tonga that extends up, this has my Superman danae now, but I would also like to get a piece of encrusting rainbow monti on here.

Oh, I forgot about fish.. Right now I am planning on one or two more Fairy wrasse, but am undecided. Then I am looking at a female swallow tail angel and one tang. Unfortunately the tangs I want are known to be PITA's, an Achilles or a Powder Brown.

The powder brown (acanthurus japonicus) is a little touchy in terms of acclimation, but they can actually have great personalities. Be careful though, as another fish goes by the same moniker (acanthurus nigricans), so make sure you know what you're getting if you chose that fish.

I actually love my mimic tang, and they sport a variety of color morphs. I'd also consider an atlantic blue tang, but I'm sure you've been looking forw a while!

Thanks for the heads up, I will make sure that I learn the difference between the Achilles and the acanthurus nigricans (white cheeked?)
From a quick picture comparison I see a couple of difference, do you think with the following information I could easily tell them apart. I am really not sure if there could be variance in one species so any help is appreciated.

1. White Spot - The Achilles is further back, the White cheeked spot is right below its eyes.
2. Color - the achilles has the orange outlines, the other has yeloow
3. Tail - The achilles tail is more curved and has a black line towards the end, the other has white.

I really appreciate the heads up, it could have been a problem. As for other tangs, the mimic is definitely a very nice looking tang and is on my short list. Who knows what will happen
