Becki's Nano-reef system

Having had large fish only tanks in the past at my parents, now I have my first house I went for a nano reef (24gallons).

It now has a lot of live rock, 3 red hermit crabs, 5 turbo snails, 2 feather dusters and a strange black crab thats appeared, which i'll be posting pictures of to see if anyone knows what it is!! I also have a rather large bristleworm that has so far evaded capture.

Its going ok, but am having some nitrate problems, around 20-30ppm constantly. Am doing 20% changes every 2 weeks at the moment, am sure it will settle soon!

Sorry in advance as i'm sure i'm going to have loads of questions!!

Becki

Welcome Becki
Are you using anything for filtration? If you could let us know what type filtation skimmer ect you have that would help with figuring out the nitrates

Hi, its a nano-cube 24 tank, which has sponge filter, activated carbon, ceramic rings and bioballs with a 290GPH pump.
It has an inbuilt surface skimmer, but i wouldnt consider it a protein skimmer, am having trouble finding one small enough for the tank, my local stockist doesn't do anything small enough.

that is the website for the tank if your interested!

thanks!

Okay, ditch the ceramic rings and bio balls, they are nitrate factories. I run mine skimmerless and waterchanges do the trick. No problem with water quality. I am willing to bet the media is what is causing the issue. how long has the tank been set up? Oh and welcome back!

Thats the same tank I have
I took out the sponge in the middle compartment, rings and bioballs. I did leave the 2 sponges in the 1st compartment but I rinse them in Fresh water every waterchange.

A skimmer isn't really neccessary as long as you keep up the water changes
