500 gallon fish only tank

I"m doing some pre-leg work for my 500 gallon tank
Dims are: 96"L x 48"W x 24"H
I have been looking at equipment, like a Good Protien Skimmer, Sump, pumps, lights, refugium, but have yet to narrow it down to what I need to run this size system.

Stocking choices as of now are: A Male and a Female Marbled Bamboo Shark, 1-Brown Banded Cat shark, and a mix of peaceful compatible fish. A school of Chromis's , Indigo Hamlet, a couple of tangs, and maybe a Zebra Eel. I would like to get some feed back on my setup.

Welcome to TRT!Don't know much about sharks, but most need bigger tanks then that!A LFS had two in a 4,000 gallon tank and you could tell they didn't have enough room (and they were2' long babies).

Well I think you would have better luck by looking into shark specific needs and going from there. As LR suggested, a 500 gallon tank isn't going to be nearly enough to keep them humanely. But most of us here are oriented toward reefs and the care requirements for sharks is much more intense

I think the footprint of your tank is a decent choice for starting, but I'd consider sharks that stay under 3 feet or so. I believe the bamboo sharks can get to near 42" in length, and a 48" wide tank may not quite cut it. There are a few species that stay under 30", so look for those. Here's a good place to start.

Regarding system setup, of primary importance in this type of aggressive setup is filtration, and mechanical filtration is going to be your best friend. You'll want a very good skimmer, maybe even two, to handle the bio-load you're looking at. Check out the Reef-Orca stuff (I think that's the name). Otherwise, lighting won't be important (since it's only fish), but flow will need to maximize the ability to get detritus to the skimmer/sump. What brand of hardware are you looking at so far?

And welcome to TRT!
